When visiting any of our seven children and their families, it is sometimes a hassle to try and get everyone into a bed at night without either making someone sleep in a sleeping bag or pallet on the floor. We don’t like having the grandchildren giving up their bed for us so about a year ago we started looking into a blow up mattress that would be easily transported and also easy to inflate.
I found just the thing at Overstock.com. After reading the description it sounded just like the thing we needed so I ordered it.
The Wenzel Insta-Bed is really just a glorified air mattress! But it comes with a battery operated pump that inflates this mattress in 75 seconds. Now, we have used this several times and we have yet to time it but it does inflate it very quickly…..that is if you do it right. The second time we went to use it I was trying to do it before anyone else came in to help and me being one that doesn’t always read instructions didn’t notice that the instructions on the pump say to remove the little lid that covers the place where the air comes into the pump. I turned that pump on and waited and waited for it to inflate. It wasn’t doing a thing. One of the granddaughters came in and she and I decided it needed new batteries. It takes 4 D cell batteries to run the pump. The granddaughter said she and her twin sister both had flash lights in their rooms that used D batteries and she would go get them and we could try the batteries because she knew they were good. We changed out the batteries…by the way, the batteries I took out of the pump worked perfectly in their flash lights! But the pump was still not inflating the mattress after I changed the batteries. My daughter-in-law came in and was looking and noticed the little inscription on the pump that the little lid must be removed during inflation! Once the lid was removed the pump had that mattress inflated in a short while! Now I must say in my defense that the writing on that lid was so small and me with bifocals would have had to have the pump right under my nose to have been able to read those words! I changed the batteries back to the ones that was in it and gave the granddaughter’s back their batteries.
The pump is located on the side near one end. They state that the pump will inflate this mattress more than twenty times on 4 D batteries. We have had the mattress about a year but have not used it twenty times but this past weekend we used it and it pumped up the mattress as fast as it did when we first got the mattress. The mattress has a built-in bellows pump that you can use to add a little more firmness to the mattress. We have never used this as we feel the mattress is firm enough for us with just the battery activated pump. You twist the pump to the “on’ position to inflate and when it is inflated to your liking you twist it to the “off” position.
The Wenzel Insta-Bed we ordered is a full sized measuring 74 inches by 54 inches by 5 inches thick when inflated. My husband and I sleep on a full sized bed when at home so this was the size we are use to. The Wenzel Insta-Bed comes packed in a 14 inch by 12 inch by 5 inch sturdy box. If you pay attention when folding it after use you can store it in this box. The box then is very easily stored in a closet or under the bed out of the way.
The Wenzel Insta-Bed is dark green with a suede top that helps to keep your bottom sheet in place. A regular full sized fitted sheet fits this mattress. The top of this mattress has a special coil construction which they say makes for added comfort. The sides and bottom are of embossed PVC and has welded construction for enhanced durability.
When you are through using this mattress it is so simple to get the air out. You just unscrew the pump and pull it out of the mattress. The air comes out pretty quickly and if you choose you can remove the little lid, turn the pump on and put it into the mattress in reverse and it will pump for complete air removal. We have never done this as we have always had all the air come out when we remove the pump. You can then fold the mattress in thirds lengthwise then fold about four times and place back in the sturdy box.
My husband and I have found this mattress to be very comfortable and have had no problems with any air leaking out. We both have not had back problems after sleeping on this mattress. Now, we neither one would want to sleep on this every night but when an extra bed is needed we find this to be just what we need. This comes in handy for us here at home too when the children and grandchildren come for a visit and we need an extra bed. This would make a great mattress inside a tent if you wanted the comforts of home while sleeping in the tent.
