I bought the Raised Aerobed from an infomercial a few months ago. For some strange reasons, those corny infomercials always end up convincing me to buy something, which of course, is not always useful. The Raised Aerobed is an excellent example of a not so useful product to purchase.
This is a rather negative review, so I’m not gonna spend too much time on the good sides of this pneumatic bed. I’ll admit that the Raised Aerobed does seem to be made of quality material. The PVC material used is very thick and looks durable. The pump connected to the bed looks sturdy. The valve located on the front of the bed is tight and does not look like it will ever leak. So, therefore, I can say that the materials used to construct this bed are pretty high quality.
Now you must be asking yourself why I hate the bed so much despite its good quality. Well, first off, an inflatable bed remains an inflatable bed. To refute what the infomercial is saying: sleeping on the Raised Aerobed does not even come close to sleeping on a real, firm matress. I slept of the bed one night and found it really uncomfortable. I am a person who enjoys sleeping on my side. The problem with the Aerobed is that it is difficult to stay stable when you are on your side. Your body continously rocks from one side to another, which is quite annoying, especially since your trying to fall asleep! The reason for this is that when your body is on a firm pocket of air, the whole body is ‘’supported”. On a real matress, your body would cave in and therefore it becomes easier to remain stable. Note that I’ve only noticed that when I am sleeping on my side. There are no stability issues when I am sleeping on my back.
Another thing I find quite annoying is the hassle of inflating and deflating the Raised Aerobed. The commercial seems to make it so easy, but lets be real, it’s not. First of all, the thing weighs ATLEAST 30 pounds, which does not make it very easy to transport. Second, its quite big if you compare it to a regular inflatable matress which fits in a small box. Third, the pump makes a very loud noise when inflating the bed… therefore, you wouldn’t want to wait until its 2 in the morning to inflate it. And finally, when comes the time to deflate it and put it away, it takes a lot of time to squeeze all the air out of it and shove it back into its cheap carrying bag.
Suprisignly, I have no negative comments to make about the actual inflation. The ”three minutes only”, as advertised on TV, is true. I never really timed it with a stopwatch, but it didn’t take more than 4 minutes for sure. As I said previously, the pump attached to the matress is pretty heavy duty. It looks strong and sturdy and doesn’t force to fill it up completely.
In short, the Raised Aerobed looks great but it’s just not practical. Don’t be fooled by the commercial, you will not bring this everywhere you go unless you have Arnold Schwartznegger to carry it around for you. I guess it can be useful for friends and family who come over, but the hassle of preparing and inflating it makes you feel like leaving it in your closet.
