We had considered the purchase of a Sleep Number bed for years after ads on the radio and even visiting a sleep number store. My parents own THREE of the sleep number beds - one for home, one for motorhome & one for vacation home in AZ. They have always raved about how much they love their beds and how well they sleep with no more aches and pains.
Price had been a major factor in our delaying the purchase of a bed for ourselves so we were thrilled when my parents offered us theirs after selling their home. We waited until the sale became final and drove 2 hours to pick up the bed. As we watched them take the bed apart my first thoughts were “Hm, foam and air mattresses - looks like camping.” I tried not to pre-judge but I was a little concerned about how it would feel to sleep on. We boxed up all the accessory parts & loaded up the bed - awkward with the adjustable frame.
Setting up at home was somewhat complicated. We didn’t have to assemble a plastic frame fortunately but it was still reminiscent of assembling a waterbed. Only worse, I think. Finally, it was completed and we sat on the bed. I felt like Mama Bear - this ones too hard, this ones too soft… hm, where’s the just right? I was disappointed in the waterbed/ air mattress feeling and hoped it would grow on me.
When we settled down to sleep for the night I fiddled with the adjustments varying from a 90 down to a 20. Nothing really grabbed me as feeling great. I finally settled on a 40 and tried to sleep. No way! I tossed and turned and ached and moaned. I felt the air inside the mattress was cold and making my joints ache.
BTW - I am in my mid-30’s and my dh is in early 40’s. Both of us are height/ weight proportional. My husband set his sleep number to 60 and although he fell asleep quickly he woke up often and tossed & turned. I can honestly say that was the worst night’s sleep of my life! When I moved my hips my head bobbled and I again thought AIR MATTRESS - CAMPING! I slept fitfully and woke with my back, hips & neck in agony! I have never woke up sore in my life other than from an injury.
In the morning I was sore and grouchy and ready to take the bed to the dump! We decided to give it one more night before making a final decision. We did go to the sleep number web site and entered all our information to obtain our true sleep number . My husbands was 60 and mine was 25. I was surprised at how low my “recommended” number was as I generally like a firmer mattress.
That night we laid down to sleep with our mattresses set to our perfect sleep number. Wrong! It was a little better but far from the blissful nights sleep we hoped for. I greatly prefer our 6 year old Sealy Posturepedic - also a hand-me-down from the parents!
We didn’t try it out but the uneven bed surface seems like it would be non-conducive to marital relations if you catch my drift! 
I told my husband it could ruin our love life and he agreed the bed had to go!
I am so relieved that we had a chance to try this bed out without committing to thousands of dollars. Also happy we weren’t too quick to get rid of our old mattress. We’ll pass the bed along to my nephew who is very excited about it. I’ll let him make up his own mind. If he doesn’t like it he can sell it on Craig’s List & buy a Sealy!!
My advice is to think real hard about if you think you’ll like the air mattress/ waterbed feeling. Many people seem to love them but I definitely wasn’t among that number. The shipping cost would have irritated me if I had to return it. Nothing like paying to have your sleep disrupted!
