After shopping for a mattress for about a couple weeks we decided to go with the Stearns & Foster mattress, the “Cadillac” of the mattress world. We wanted a high quality and very firm mattress. I thought it was too firm, but with my wife’s back trouble, I decided I would get used to it as it was recommended that we get a very firm mattress.
After about a month or so I finally got used to the mattress and it seemed great, my wife was sleeping better and her back was hurting less in the mornings. Unfortunately this did not last very long, four months in after purchasing the mattress we noticed that there was a significant dip in the middle (we are both average weight for our height) and not only her back was hurting in the morning but so was mine. We called the store up and since we were past the 3 month allowed period for returning or exchanging the mattress we had to get the manufacturer involved.
This was an interesting experience, I never knew of all the guidelines involved in determining the worthiness of a mattress. Apparently there are a number of criteria for measuring this, one of them is the amount of “sag” that the mattress has. I was not home when the inspector came to inspect the mattress, but I understood later that they would not replace our mattress as we did not have the required amount of sag in the mattress. It has been a while but I believe the required depth is 1.5 inches. When I measured we had more than that amount, however the inspector decided to use a more creative way to determine the depth (instead of looking at the center, where it was the greatest, they went one quarter in from both sides and checked the depth there, of course this was not the deepest part of the sag) and hence we were rejected the exchange.
Some time later and many phone calls later we then were granted a second inspection, this time there was another issue with the mattress, the lining on the outside had come apart, faulty stitching or some such issue. The inspector also checked the sag in the middle, this time measuring the way we had expected and determined that the sag measured would qualify for a replacement mattress.
Now the story gets more interesting. The model we had, Exeter Firm, was no longer manufactured (I can see why) and we were then given what was claimed to be an equivalent mattress, the “Rose Leaf” model. This time, within one month of sleeping on the mattress we knew this was not the mattress for us, we wanted one that would support our back, not one that we would sink in to. This time I called the mattress store and was hopeful that we could exchange the mattress as we were now within the 3 month period of receiving our new mattress - once again another let down, we were informed that was only applicable for the initial purchase and did not apply for replaced mattresses.
I have a colleague that recently purchased a Sterns & Foster, unfortunately I was unable to warn him based on our experience but wanted to let everyone else know of this story.
