Background
After our wedding, as a present to ourselves, my wife and I purchased an expensive Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale mattress. We felt that the large price tag was justified as we expected to have this mattress for 10 or more years and understand that sleep is such a vital part of health. For the first month, the mattress was wonderful. However after only a month, body impressions were starting to be created and both my wife and I experienced our first misgivings concerning this purchase.
It is now three years later and I find myself unable to sleep through the night on my back (the only position I can remain more than five minutes in without pain). My wife, on the other hand, has been experiencing chronic hip and back pain for the past year and I firmly believe that the condition is directly attributable to this terrible product.
Warranty Problems
Finally at our wits end, we contacted Simmons through their 800 warranty telephone number. We were told that someone would come and inspect the mattress within the next seven days. After seven days, I called Simmons again and explained that no one had inspected our bed. Again, the operator promised that they would send someone within one week. After two weeks of waiting, at 9:00pm on a Sunday night, I received a voice mail from a Simmons inspector. Upon returning his call (9:00am Monday morning), he was unable to fit me in his schedule for the coming two weeks. Exasperated, and still not sleeping well, I called Simmons AGAIN to tell them that no one had come and inspected our mattress.
As we were not getting anywhere with inspectors, Simmons decided to send us our own paperwork to fill out detailing the mattress condition. After filling out the forms, taking pictures, and making measurements (a process which takes around 2 hours), we sent the paperwork back to Simmons feeling like we accomplished something. Despite the 1.5 inch depressions on either side of the bed and our inability to actually get a good night’s sleep on this mattress, Simmons declined our warranty claim due to 1.5″ indentations “being normal wear and tear associated with their product.”
Outcome
I am sure that if we sleep on it a few more years, we can make the indentations deeper but at this point I am counting my losses and hoping that my story will keep other people from making the mistake of buying a Simmons product!
