I don’t make any large purchases without researching it to death first. I read good and bad reviews about this Sleep Number 5000 bed and can’t tell you how thankful I am that I ignored the bad and went ahead with the purchase. After three visits to the store and trying out each model we went with the King Size pillow top 5000. We had also tried out all the conventional beds from latex to tempurpedic to spring coil, etc. Also, I might note that this web site has inspired me to start writing my own reviews to hopefully help people like myself who have a hard time making a decision.
We have had it for about a month now and absolutely love it! Putting it together wasn’t hard at all but a tip is that if you get the platform with it and have a hard time sliding the pieces together, try putting some vaseline on it. YES, the bed does smell right out of the box, it has a strange plastic odor which really bothered me a first but after about two weeks or so that seemed to go away. I also set my ionic breeze and air freshener next to it which seemed to help. The bed does seem to sleep a lot hotter than our old mattress which I did hear about before but it isn’t an issue with us, we just use a lighter comforter now. The level of support and comfort you get from this bed is outstanding!! I sleep deeper than ever before and do not wake up with the backache that I use to on my old spring mattress. It has great support that forms to your body and can be adjusted with the touch of a button (it does NOT hammock like some reviews suggest). What more could you want from a bed? Now in the mornings I want to stay in bed just to enjoy the comfort not because I am tired. Also, our dog likes the bed (a 75 lb lab) and I have no fear of her putting a whole in it as it is made very sturdy. We had a concern that she would wake us in the night getting on and off of it but that has not even been an issue. Also, instead of paying $100 for the legs we just set it on our old frame which works just fine.
