We purchased the king-size Coleman air bed for car camping trips. The mattress, constructed out of Coleman’s “exclusive PVC formula”, is inflated by a battery-powered air pump. After the purchase of our first Coleman bed, I found that I was hitting the ground before the sun came up. Thinking that I had a defective bed, I contacted Coleman’s customer service. After having me cut out the logo on the air bed and sending it to them as a proof of purchase, Coleman sent me another air bed.
On our first campout, I was surprised to discover that, once again, parts of my 6′ 2″, 220 lb body were again on the ground before sunup. I’m getting ready to contact Coleman again in the hopes that the third time will be the charm.
On a positive note, the king-size bed allows me to lay down without my feet hanging off the end. When fully inflated, its almost hard to tell this bed apart from a real mattress bed. The construction of this bed provides for a smooth surface on one side and a “flocked” surface on the other. The flocked surface in has proven itself useful in preventing one from sliding off of the bed while in a sleeping bag. It is a feature that I would truly recommended in any air bed. Deflating the bed is the simple process of opening the valve and applying weight to the bed, unlike some of my friends who have to apply a reverse pump to suck out the air.
The provided air pump is powered by four D cell batteries. With fresh batteries, this pump will fill the bed in about 10-15 minutes. As the batteries get depleted, their ability to completely fill the bed diminishes so it is important to have fresh batteries on hand. The pump automatically turns on by screwing on the adapter nozzle that fits into the pump. While this feature prevents the pump from accidentally turning on when placed in storage, the nozzle is a separate component and is not tied to the pump itself. This will cause you to occasionally empty your camp box in search of the nozzle that has separated itself from the pump. Additionally, the battery compartment is kept closed by two latches which can easily open when in storage, thus spilling out the batteries. I found that a fresh set the batteries would fill the bed about 10 times. As I typically campout for two nights during the course of a weekend, I would have to inflate and re-inflate the bed for each night. How long would the batteries last for you? You do the math. Although pumps with rechargeable batteries are available, my next purchase will be an electric pump that plugs into the cigarette lighter.
**UPDATE**
Since writing this review, I replaced the latest quickbed and am pleased to report that it held firm—almost. This is the third bed that I have owned; the first from the store and two subsequently received from Coleman. Getting Coleman to replace the second bed almost took an act of God and definitely required an act of faith.
I called Coleman to report my disappointment with their replacement, the customer service rep attempted to tell me that I was over inflating the bed with my certainly not hi-powered 4-D cell air pump. Why then, I asked, would the bed not deflate only to the point of proper inflation. To this, he could not respond and I was getting nowhere. Remembering the exchange process, I cut out the Coleman logo and the valve and packed them with a cover letter requesting a replacement. In less than two weeks, a new one was at the door.
The results? Over the next few campouts, the results were mixed. Though I did not wake up due to my posterior hitting the ground, I found that the bed had lost some air. After topping off the bed, the second night was a repeat of the first.
On our next campout, I changed pumps. Replacing the battery powered pump with a 12v electric air pump allows for not only faster inflation but the ability to pump up a much firmer bed due to the higher air pressure capacity of the electric pump. (I thought about the excuse that the Coleman customer service rep had made) The bed maintained most of its pressure that night..and the next. I found that by over inflating the bed, its comfort was still superior despite its “normal” air loss over a two day period.
My purchase recommendation? No, if you plan to use a battery powered pump. Yes, if you have an electric pump. Because of this discovery, I have upgraded my overall recommendation
