This bed is a fantastic concept…but it fails on a number of levels, the primary one being that it DOES NOT BREATHE. You are sleeping on what are essentially huge rubber air bladders, so if you run even the slightest bit warm, you’ll roast in the bed. TempurPedic users have the same problem. Synthetic materials are not body-friendly and I wish we’d thought about that before spending thousands of dollars on this bed, which we’re now getting rid of. My husband and I are going back to a conventional bed because we wake almost every night sweating, with the heat being generated from below us. A sleeper’s body heat hits the rubber bladders…and simply gets reflected back onto the sleeper.
After we’d had our Series 5000 for about a year, we removed the pillow-top to air the bed out and discovered that the air bladders were both damp…from us being hot and sweaty all the time…and they were COVERED in black mold. We were mortified. The mold was literally in the shapes of our bodies and the entire inner components of the bed were damp. We called Select Comfort in a mild fury, and to their credit, they did replace the moldy parts right away and at no cost to us, with new parts treated with mold resistant chemicals…but they offered no explanation as to why this problem existed at all. They only acknowledged that it WAS a problem and they were “addressing it”. I’ve known other customers to have this same problem. CHECK YOUR AIR BLADDERS FOR MOLD.
The other issue we’ve had is that the “foundation” that comes with these beds is the flimsiest piece of junk we’ve ever seen. Its cheap plastic that hardly fits together properly and it makes the worst creaking noises with even the slightest movement. We threw it away after about 6 months and put just the top of the bed onto a platform headboard, but we have dealt with the lack of breathability for as long as we feel able. We’re done with this bed for good.
We loved the idea of being able to adjust the firmness of a bed, and in that respect, it was comfortable…but honestly, we’ve been so miserable with our bodies not able to breathe in this thing that firmness is the least of our problems with it. We’ve never, ever had problems like this before when sleeping. We’re both in our late-20s so we’re not talking about age-related hot flashes or anything like that! The bed is HOT. Period. We tried to deal with this issue because the bed was so expensive, but sleeping in pools of our own sweat every night is just too gross.
A very, very disappointing bed.
