When I bought my Tempur-Pedic Euro-Bed I had the option of getting two Tempur-Pedic brand pillows free of charge. I chose two of the traditionally shaped ComfortPillows as I am not exactly a fan of those contoured memory foam pillows; they seem just so mechanical and impersonal.
The ComfortPillow:
The ComfortPillow, unlike most memory foam pillows, is a traditionally shaped pillow. The ComfortPillow is made from Tempur-Pedic’s modified version of viscoelastic memory foam (the same material that they use for their beds). If you are not familiar with viscoelastic foam, it’s a dense memory foam that NASA invented during the 1970s to help combat the forces that the astronauts would have to endure on space shuttle take-off. The advantage of this stuff for humans here on earth, according to Tempur-Pedic, is a superior foam that supports your head and neck allowing for better sleep. The ComfortPillow is available in two sizes; standard (25″x 19″) and queen (29″x19″). Note: included with each ComfortPillow is a machine washable pillowcase.
My Experience:
For most of my life I have slept on either a cheap-ole cotton pillow or a feather pillow. It wasn’t until I hit my late 20s did I feel the need for any type of therapeutic pillow to help combat a stiff neck. To remedy my sore neck problems I decided to join the whole memory foam band wagon. Like most people who first switch from their standard pillows to memory foam, I looked for the cheapest memory foam pillows on the market. I had went from first buying the $20 “Dream Pillow” (a non-viscoelastic memory foam pillow) to the more expensive “Comfort Creations Viscoelastic Pilllow” that claimed to be just like the Tempur-Pedic. Naturally, none of these copycat pillows were nearly as comfortable and seemed to just exacerbate my sore neck problems.
Unlike the majority of viscoelastic memory foam pillows on the market, the ComfortPillow is quite heavy; 8lbs for the standard size and 10 lbs for the queen. This hefty weight is apparently due to how dense the memory foam cells are in this pillow. I mention the weight of this product because it’s probably not one of those pillows you are going to be able to toss around at night or have a pillow fight with, unless of course you plan on knocking out the person.
I had my doubts about all the hype regarding the Tempur material, especially after having all those other visco pillows fail to meet my comfort standards. The ComfortPillow, though not very cuddly, has been a huge asset to my sleep. Even after the very first night with the ComfortPillow I noticed a huge difference in the way my neck and even my back felt when waking up in the morning. My neck wasn’t sore the next morning, I felt better rested, and after a few weeks of using this pillow it even seemed like the bags under my eyes had diminished. Since I had not yet received my Euro-Bed, I attribute this improvement in sleep quality completely to the ComfortPillow.
The ComfortPillow, though it may feel a bit odd at first, becomes extremely comfortable once you get accustomed to the way this pillow comforms to your head and neck. Unlike your run of the mill viscoelastic memory foam pillows, the Tempur material conforms to fit the shape of your head and neck instead of forcing into a position to match the shape of the pillow. It also doesn’t collapse when lying down on it for long periods of time and if you switch positions the pillow quickly comforms to your new position. Having said that, there is always enough support to keep your head and neck free of pressure points.
One of my biggest concerns with buying such a dense memory foam pillow was the heat that it might generate. I have vascular rosacea (a skin condition that causes blood vessels under the face to swell) and anyone with this disorder knows what heat can do to an already red face. While this pillow does make my face a little warmer than a conventional feather pillow, it doesn’t make my face and neck warm enough at night to aggravate my rosacea. Though not highly publicized, I should note that many people report allergies to the Tempur material, so I highly suggest making sure that the company that you buy this pillow from will allow you to return it if it causes rashes, headaches, etc.
Reliability:
I have had my two ComfortPillows for around 6 months now and have had absolutely no problems with them. These pillows feel exactly the way they did when I first got them, which is to say they are still very comfortable and still offer great support.
Price/warranty/availability:
The Comfort Pillow ranges anywhere from $150 dollars at retail mattress stores to around 70 bucks on eBay. I got mine for free from a mattress warehouse with the Euro-Bed. If anything goes haywire with your new Tmepur-Pedic pillow, Tempur-Pedic gives the ComfortPillow a 3-year limited warranty.
Final Thoughts:
Overall this has been a reliable, comfortable, and therapeutic pillow that I recommend whether or not you own a Tempur-Pedic mattress. ~4 stars~
