Let me start by saying my mom and I both have fibromyalgia. On top of that I have had bilateral hip surgeries and was in a bad car accident that caused soft tissue damage in my neck/back. My mom bought her select comfort bed 5 years before I did and still has it, and I bought mine 6 years ago.
The basics:
Yes, Select Comfort is the store you see in the mall. The concept of the bed is pretty simple- inside your “mattress” is one or more air chambers that are fully adjustable for softness by the user. Select Comfort offers twin to king size beds, and lots of extras. These extras include pillow tops, and various controls with differing displays. I bought the basic (classic) queen size model. For $900 I got the frame, select comfort version of box springs, and a dual chamber air mattress. It came in boxes delivered to my door.
Setting up the bed:
I looked in my boxes and noted that nothing looked even remotely like a bed. After pulling out the directions things started making sense. The frame is simple- it works like any other bed frame that the supports unfold and snap together. Mine also has a central support bar that gets set in. Select Comfort’s version of box springs is actually a durable plastic frame with multiple support crossbars and flat panels that sit on the top. You don’t need any tools to put it together since everything tightens with wing nuts.
Lastly the mattress. First I layed out the mattress casing on the top of the “box springs.” Next I inserted the foam around the outside edges. The foam helps to hold the air chambers in place, and also keeps you from rolling off the bed! The I put one air chamber in, running it’s air hose through the handy hole in the back of the mattress casing and into the air compressor. I put in the middle support foam and did the same for the other air chamber. After that’s done I grabbed the controls (these have approximately 4 foot cords and are attached to the compressor under the bed), and inflated one mattress chamber at a time. When they were inflated enough I grabbed the top of the mattress casing a zipped it on. Bed done, in under 30 minutes.
To pillow-top or not?
YOu can spend the extra buck for the fancy pillow top, or you can go to Wal-Mart and get foam in the bedding section that works just as well. I chose Wal-Mart. Over a period of 15 years it might be smarter to get the pillow-top instead of replacing foam when it gets flat, but if you don’t have the money, the foam works fine.
Moving across the country with your bed.
I’ve moved twice since owning this bed. It’s the last thing I pack and the first thing I put together. One benefit is that you don’t have to pay the moving company for
mattress packing as it all easily fits in boxes. Also, if you have space in your car you can put the bed in and have it before your furniture arrives.
Is it worth it?
YES! I can sleep ( not just lay there, but sleep) in this bed even when I hurt. I slept in it after hip surgery! If it doesn’t feel right you just pick up your controller and change it.
Little annoyances.
It hard to cuddle if your spouse and your don’t agree on a softness. The middle foam can seem like a barrier and be hard to sleep on. For other recreational activities it’s best to pick a side as the often causes you to roll one way or another. Your child will get nothing from jumping on the bed, there’s no bounce!
Update:
My parents just moved with their air bed. It is now about 13 years old and is starting to show some wear. They had difficulties inflating the air chamber because their pump was over heating. It did inflate, it just took a long time to do both (4+ hours). The foam in the sides of the bed is starting to flatten as well.
All of these parts are replacable from Select Comfort. My parents aren’t really upset about the aging of the bed because it is SO comfortable. They consider the replacements “maintenance.”
I still highly recommend buying the bed!
