Choosing a mattress is a very personal decision where one size does not fit all but in my opinion, tempurpedic sure comes close.
I had been sleeping on a waterbed for over 20 years. My waterbed broke one night and after waking up with a soggy side, I decided it was time to make a change. I had researched numerous beds: Sleep Number, Sterns and Foster, Tempurpedic as well as other memory foam beds. My wife & I visited a MatressFirm showroom and we tried out several Tempurpedic beds side by side with the others I mentioned. We really liked the Tempurpedic Deluxe and the Rhapsody models. The other serious contender was the Sleep Number. There are some inherit problems that people gloss over with this system. There are two air bladders with some kind of foam in the middle to separate them. That foam can be felt in the middle of the bed and it restricts the comfortable sleeping area also, after time, there will be a “v” effect in the bed from that middle material sinking. Also with the Sleep Number, there are many moving parts. The more moving parts, the more possibility of something breaking. If something is mechanical it is not a matter of IF it will break but WHEN. There is another thing that bothered me about the air system. The air mattress did not totally distribute our weight so to relieve pressure points so guess what was added on top? A layer of foam!
After reading e-opinions and much web research, we purchased the Rhapsody model because that fit our comfort level. Tempurpedic’s reputation, guarantee, quality materials and longevity were deciding factors. They have the Good Housekeeping Seal, endorsed by 25,000 medical professionals and endorsed by the arthritis foundation. Others make memory foam but none come close to the feel and quality of the Tempurpedic. Think of it. They warranty their mattress not to have a permanent depression of over 3/4 in. in 20 years! That is amazing! Also, to compare other knock-off brands you have to look at the lb/sq. ft density of the memory foam. Tempurpedics is 5.1 lb/sq in and their new TempurHD material that the Rhapsody had in its top layer was 7.1 lbs/sq in. Most of the memory foam beds and toppers that are available at Costco, Target, etc are 4lb/sq in range.
When it was delivered and unpackaged it did have a chemical smell people talked about which was not that bad. It reminded me of a freshly painted room which I kind of liked it. The smell went away in a few weeks and never really bothered us. The mattress did take some time to get used to. You must give it a couple of months. That is why Tempurpedic gives a 90 day trial. For us it was only about a couple of weeks.
After a couple of months of sleeping on it, the comfort, DEEP sleep, support and pressure relief are startling. We LOVE this bed! It is soft yet firm and supportive at the same time as your body melts into it. Because of the support and pressure relieving properties, you don’t toss, turn or move that much during the night which results in a deeper sleep. There seems to be a larger sleeping area than our foam and water bed because the support is from edge to edge. I don’t wake up in the middle of the night with an arm, leg or shoulder being asleep or tingling. You can even sleep with your arm extended off the side and it doesn’t cut off circulation but conforms to it. When I wake up each morning, I do not feel tired or achy but extraordinarily refreshed It is like feeling 20 years younger! Since sleeping on the Tempurpedic I don’t have that mid-afternoon drowsiness much any more. My wife and my snoring have disappeared as well because of the hypo-allergenic qualities of the tempur material. Why? She was extremely allergic to dust mites. Dust mites do not like memory foam and it is treated so they really will avoid it. Most conventional beds are farms for dust mites which cause people’s allergies to react and thus they snore and have sinus stuffiness. The hypo-allergenic qualities were an unknown to us when we purchased the bed but were a wonderful surprise. I will go to bed with some back pain and wake up with it totally gone. No matter how you sleep - back, side, stomach there is cushy support. I have not had any overheating problems that I have read about. I think Tempurpedic has addressed that issue by redesigning their beds with the convoluted foam bases that allows air to pass through. The bed did start out being a little stiff, but it softened up over about 6-8 weeks. We were told by the salesperson to walk on it every day for a while and that would hasten the process of softening up. The softening up comes from some of the tempur cells coming from the factory closed and having to open up.
Even though it was more than we really wanted to spend, I grudgingly say it is worth it. I thought about how much time we spent in bed (1/3 of our lives) and how can you put a price on sleeping well and being well-rested during the day? If it lasts 10 years, that is $300/year or $1 a day for a good nights sleep.
Three things that you need to realize if you purchase a tempurpedic bed:
1. You need time to adjust. I got used to it after a couple of weeks but everyone is different. It takes a while to get used to the feel and response of this bed or any bed for that matter. When you switch to any kind of bed, it is not familiar to your body and you immediately won’t like it. Give this bed time because of the different material and feel. It will take 2 weeks to 2 months to adjust. That is why tempurpedic gives a 90 day money back trial period. If you just don’t like it after 60-90 days, you probably never will. You can get a refund if you send it back within that 90 day period.
2. The warranty has some prorating in it. It can be found on tempupedic’s website but the upshot of it is this: If there is a crack in the foam, defect or more than 3/4 in. depression in the mattress they will replace it free for the 1st 10 years. The 10th year they will only give credit for 50% of the cost. The prorated charge will increase by 5% for each subsequent year of the prorated period - 6th yr, they will cover 45%, 7th - 40%, etc.
3. You can not use an electric blanket or heating pad on this mattress. The tempur material is sensitive to weight and heat. The extreme heat from an electric blanket or heating pad can break down and destroy the material and may void the warranty.

I have had the bed a year now and still love it! It has become a little bit softer to the feel but has kept it’s shape. I am still getting deep, refreshing sleep on this bed and still do not wake up with aches and muscle tightness in my back. This bed has the amazing quality of being soft enough where it needs to be, yet not so soft that you are not adequately supported. The only thing I do not like is the tempur pillow that was purchased at the same time as the bed. It is just too hard for a pillow. I highly recommend a tempurpedic mattress. You just have to find the one that fits your preference and budget and then give a little time to get used to it.
