My wife and I bought a king-size Tempur-Pedic mattress one year ago this month. We had been sleeping on a water bed, and I was having extensive sleep problems that included shoulder numbness, hands and arms falling asleep, neck pain, back pain, etc. I would lay awake for almost an hour trying to fall asleep each night. The motion generated by each bed partner getting in or out of the bed would almost throw you on the floor. I had been seeing the advertisements for Tempur-Pedic on television. There was a retail store in a town 30 miles away, so my wife and I drove over to see one for ourselves. We both “tested” the mattress, and decided we would buy one.
The mattress was delivered, and we quickly tore down the water bed, and set up our new Tempur-Pedic.
The first night on the bed was worse than the water bed. It was hard as a rock, which our December cold bedroom didn’t help any, as we found out. We called customer service to ask what could be done. We were told to walk on the bed, and were also warned that we could not use electric blankets on this bed due to the memory foam that worked off of body heat. The walking on the bed made for some good excercise. It’s like walking in a soggy field. We put our five year old to that job. He thought it was fun to get to jump on the bed, at last! We had heck trying to get him to quit jumping on his after that, though. Anyway, after about a week, we finally started getting used to the bed. The bed molds itself to you, and after a few minutes in the bed, you can shift a leg or arm, and then move back into the depression that had been created. My wife was noticing that I was falling asleep much faster, and I noticed that I was now sleeping through the night. I also wasn’t waking up with limbs asleep, no pain of any kind. We skipped along just fine, until summer came along. We then had a problem with the bed holding heat. We would wake up sweating, and hot. We adjusted this problem by buying a room window air conditioner to supplement our central unit. That solved the problem. We have had the mattress a year now, and I absolutely love it, my wife is “okay” with it. The motion transfer of your partner it 99% eliminated, which is great. I get up real early during the week, and sleep in on weekends, and neither one of us ever knows that the other got in or out of bed.
This mattress is not the perfect wonder bed that they advertise, but it is the best sleep I’ve had in my adult life. You will have to find the little tricks to make it comfortable for you.
