We recently bought the Deluxe (10″) Tempur-pedic on recommendation from friends and because we had to replace our 10-year old mattress. We considered it because we have a platform bed and the Tempur-pedic doesn’t require box springs so lends itself well to platform beds. It was purchased through a retail outlet that has a 90 day money back guarantee.
Our Experience
Unfortunately this is not the bed for us. The first night was okay and we knew from our friends that it usually takes time to get used to this bed. However, after just a few nights I noticed the following:
- Never a solid night’s sleep as to turn over in the bed is difficult and I would wake up to do so
- Woke up each morning with fairly severe lower back pain and overall stiffness - the morning stretch became a must
I tried the bed for several nights and noted no change. Continued to wake up stiff and with lower back pain. My husband has experienced the same symptoms although not as severe and continued to sleep in the bed. I however switched to the guest bed (Sealy full size from Sam’s Club - mid range mattress) and lo and behold - no back pain and minimal stiffness. Additionally, I travel for work and spent a week at a Sheraton on their “sweet sleeper bed” and also experienced no lower back pain and no morning stiffness.
Because this bed came so highly recommended and we found it so uncomfortable I went in search of other’s experiences with the bed as we did want to give it a fair tryout. I was pleased to find reviews of this bed that outlined exactly the same symptoms we were experiencing. It confirmed for us that perhaps the bed is not for everyone.
Bottom Line
We’ll spend a couple of days searching for something new and then return our Tempur-pedic. It simply isn’t for us.
I find it interesting that it is either a love it or hate it proposition and that those who don’t like the bed have more or less the same issues.
I would highly recommend that if you try this bed you ensure that you purchase it with a 90-day guarantee. I would also recommend that if you travel you try a more traditional mattress as to switch between that and a Tempur-pedic is difficult.
