My husband and I decided we needed a new mattress since he has chronic back pain and our old bed was almost 10 years old. We decided to go all out, since his comfort and health are more important to us then saving a few dollars. We had read and heard about the wonders of the Tempur-pedic and were excited to start our life of comfort and his life of minimal back pain. We order the Tempur-pedic Classic, which is a 8 inch tight piece of special foam in a synthetic zippered case.
We followed all of the many instructions - since when do you need instructions to use a mattress? Proper stiff support underneath, no mattress pad, constant room temp above 65, etc, etc.
Boy, were we wrong! After two nights of so called sleep - mainly tossing and turning, his back hurt more then ever, and I - someone who kayaks, bikes, runs and has never had back pain - could barely stand upright. My back, shoulder, neck were in pain. I had lots of Advil and espresso that day.
We had bought it from a store that allows exchanges up to 15 days. But, the new mattress must be of equal or greater value. So we were locked into spending $1,599 or more for a mattress. At this point we were sleep deprived and in pain and would pay anything for sleep. Actually, I believe the had no interest in trying it even one more day.
I know Tempur-pedic says you may need two weeks to get used to their product, but we both work full-time meaning we had to be rested and pain free every day. Isn’t that the reason you buy a new mattress? To rest. Not as an endurance test? Not to prove that the human body can get used to anything? The thought of loading up on coffee and Advil just to get through the next two weeks was ridiculous.
The new mattress we wanted just happend to be the same price as the Tempr-pedic. So we exchanged it easily, but had to “sleep” on the Tempur-pedic three more nights until delivery. Once we layered two mattress pads, three blankets, and a down mattress topper on top of the Tempur-pedic we were able to sleep OK.
Our new mattress is an old fashioned Posturpedic - firm with a pillow top. Aaaahhhh. Nothing like a good night’s sleep.
