The one thing a person should be able to count on in life is a good nights sleep. Sleep is the one bastion of everyday life where you should be able to go off to and be all alone for 6-8 hours and allow your mind to decompress from all the stress of daily life to awaken renewed and ready to go off into battle. Invariably though, we will all come to a point where there is, a hopefully brief period, where you awaken only to find you have a ache in your shoulder or back and start the armchair diagnostics blaming it on heavy lifting, rough housing with the kids or wrestling with the spouse. Stop right there! Go and look at that mattress, more than likely that is your culprit!
After a prolonged period where I had myself convinced I needed a new rotator cuff the light came on! DUH! The old slab had staged its last nightmare months ago. I was convinced it would last a lifetime. After all it was “custom made” at a local mattress factory just for me, and it was absolutely MARVELOUS! I was scared now. The company had long since been purchased by a chain and was now pumping out $300-$500 king sized beds for the horribly misinformed. My every available moment was spent looking at mattresses for a week! My wife, the little thing that she is, had no complaints, her side was great she said, and it was. I am average height and weight, but I tend to grind my teeth and run the mile in my sleep so… I have special needs apparently. I looked at the Serta’s, Sealy’s, and all the Department store mattresses and then I saw the Sterns & Foster!
The one thing that impresses you about this mattresses set right off the bat is the price…it’s up their…$2600.00 up there! I mean, I wanted to sleep, not entertain the neighborhood! After walking around trying few more units on the sales floor I kept coming back to the Sterns & Foster. It felt “right.”
Sterns & Foster incorporate an “edge encasement system” that keeps all the edges from collapsing under your weight, making for additional sleeping surface. Okay, I really don’t sleep on the edge of the mattress, but this technology deters edge break down, which is the first sign of a mattress losing its build integrity. There is no border rod that the low-end consumer beds use. Instead the coil network comes right up to the edge and interlocked with extruded foam. The entire 12 ¾ gauge innerspring network (mental note to yourself; you want to get the heaviest gauge innersprings possible.) is injection molded with high tech rubber polymer foam that has excellent recovery and resilient properties. The edges are firm, not hard. You cannot feel anything remotely metallic, or structural, just this subtle yet firm surface
The entire bed is covered in Damask fabric, as is the pillow top, which is a really nice touch. The pillow top, though not overly stuffed, adds a comfort feature to this firm and well-built mattress set. The perimeter of the mattress is has brass air vents to promote breathing, moisture release and freshness. Lifting this mattress or box spring is not easy feat as it is quite heavy, which is generally the first sign of a good bed.
The Box spring is a handy piece of technology as well. Incorporating a series of high carbon steel interlocking grid layers, the box spring utilizes steel center and perimeter beams set on torsion bar modules to absorb movement and lessen the impact on not only the box spring but mattress as well. Although I wouldn’t recommend sleeping on a box spring, I was surprised how comfortable it actually was.
Some important things to note in the care and feeding of your mattress are to keep the kids from jumping on them. As much fun as it is for them, it damages a mattress faster than anything just about any other use. That type weight and impact distribution weight quickly loosens and separates coils. Imagine beating your box mattress with a hammer.
Always carrying a mattress on its side to not damage the innerspring unit, never bending it more than 20º.
Because of the mattress pad, it is unnecessary to flip this mattress but turning every 6 weeks is recommended.
In closing, I have to say writing the check for this mattress hurt until my first nights sleep. I haven’t second guesses myself since. Sterns And Foster warrants this mattress set for 10 years to the original owner, which includes replacement is necessary. That was the best warranty I found, in shopping the other companies. I have to say my aches went away after about three days and I have slept like an absolute infant on my new Sterns & Foster bed. Running the mile, has never felt so good!
