I was told in several different stores this was the best commonly available mattress if you needed an extremely firm and extremely durable mattress. Something about the coils being twice baked and basted in their own juice, I think. You could pay much more and get larger or more fancy, but not necessarily firmer or more durable.
What do you wear to bed? How about your mattress?
Don’t forget the deep pocket sheets - this mattress is much thicker than standard. My wife found a great deal on king sized deep pocket sheets, so it can be done. If you already have plenty of pillowcases, the chances are you’ll have more - the stores like to sell this stuff in complete sets.
Since you’re spending all this money anyway, might as well consider a bed pad. Not too thick, or you could defeat the purpose of an extra firm mattress.
Ask how much, but don’t believe them
First there’s how much they say the mattress costs. This is like the sticker price on a car. If you paid this, stop reading now or you’ll never fall asleep no matter how good your mattress is.
Then there’s the ’sort of’ real price. It seems makers of mattresses set a price below which stores are not supposed to sell their products. We managed to get this price at a Bloomingdales super-duper best sale of the year type sale.
Then we went somewhere else. The price on the label was four or five hundred higher, but when confronted with the Bloomingdales low price, he admitted he could match it, though he said he could not go any lower under any circumstances because the makers of the bed would not permit it. We told them Bloomingdales would give us this price minus a hundred dollars because my mother was getting a new charge card. I’m not sure Bloomies would have given us this since she already has one and it might be in both her and my fathers name, but you never see mattress salespeople feeling bad about how much extra they get off people not in the know.
The manager made a phone call, either to Sterns and Foster or to his own higher ups, or even possibly to nobody in particular. He told us how surprised he was they had agreed to the extra discount - but we got the mattress for one hundred below the ‘rock bottom’ minimum.
The proof of the mattress is in the sleeping
I was a little worried I would have trouble getting to sleep, either because it was a new bed generally or extra firm. Nope. I slept like a baby my first night. The stuffing on a ten year old mattress may well be packed down as hard as a firm mattress, although not in the ideal position for back support. A little shifting around of pillows and I sleep more comfortably than previously. My wife is still getting used to it, including the height. She’s also annoyed a king size not longer (though it is wider) than a queen size. I think it’s hard to get a mattress more than six feet long unless your budget is pretty long too.
Delivery - it’s not just for babies anymore!
Since the delivery experience could have happened with any mattress, I’m going to put it in even though it doesn’t just apply to this particular mattress. It’s such an important part of the bed buying experience I’m going to mention it here so anyone who only reads a few epinions doesn’t get slaughtered.
We were lucky it was written IN THE CONTRACT that they would take away the old mattress and boxspring. It was a nasty day that day, and the delivery guys looked at the contract before taking them. I indignantly called Sleepy’s when I took the garbage to the incinerator chute and discovered the four metal pieces of the bed frame had been abandoned there. They told me they weren’t required to throw them out, though we had tipped three guys ten dollars each and emphasized directions to the dumpster. Still, I’m not argumentative, so I went to get the old cart from the co-op cellar to take down the metal before we got find. I discovered the mattress abandoned inside the building! Now I was furious, and called again, and this time both problems were corrected the next day after we expressed our anger in no uncertain terms.
MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT WILL BE THROWN OUT AND WHERE AND HOW, AND FIND OUT ANYTHING YOU CAN ABOUT THE DELIVERY COMPANY!
November 2001 update
The rule for flipping and rotating mattresses is this : if you got this mattress because you had back problems, you have a worse than average back combined with a MUCH heavier than average mattress. You need help from more than one strong person - you supervise.
If this is such a pain you tend to put it off, this mattress will stand up better than average to not being flipped and rotated as much as it’s supposed to be, even when new. Not that I know this from personal experience, you understand.
