Readers should look at my other review on the Simmons Backcare 400 first. This mattress replaced that one under the warranty. I wrote that review in January 2005.
As I said, this mattress replaced the awful Backcare 400 that broke down in less than 10 months. I will always mention that you need to be very careful with the mattress “name game”. Mattress companies, especially the new one in the Austin area where I bought mine, make sure that Simmons puts a name on their mattresses that is different than the exact same mattress that a nearby competitor sells. Mine is called the Merriam Super Pillow Top Plush that may have another name and/or Level 100 or 200 on the sown on label. The model number on mine is M17258.70.7134. That is the best way to tell what mattress you have.
This mattress is doing the exact same thing that the last one did. The center of the bed is becoming an endless pit by the time you wake up in the morning. I spoke with the owner of the store and he claims that these mattresses “conform” to the shape of your body. What this amounts to is the bed is breaking down and becoming very uncomfortable just like the last one. The several inches of foam rubber they use starts pancaking or flattening out making it difficult to get a good nights sleep. I am at the point now where I can honestly say I will NEVER buy another Simmons mattress for the rest of my life. Simmons has a rule where if you put a string tautly across the middle of the bed and there is an inch and a half of space between the string and the mattress, it is covered under the warranty. Well, it doesn’t take much of a genius to realize that mattress are very soft. Also, you can look at it like this. If you are standing on a frozen lake and some parts of the lake have ice a foot thick and other parts just an inch thick, you can see where I am going. Just because the mattress looks like it is uniform on the surface doesn’t mean it will stay that way when you put your total body weight on the bed. This is how they get out of replacing the mattress. This bed hasn’t gotten as bad as the other one (the Backcare 400) and they want me to suffer on it until it does get that bad. Well, I am out of $1300 now. I have heard through other stores that Simmons pillowtop mattresses break down fast, and that is most definitely true. These stores are making a killing on these mattresses. It is worse than highway robbery and these mattresses are made like junk. I am totally disgusted with Simmons now. The only way I would be happy is if they refunded part of my money. I don’t want another mattress from them.
UPDATE: On 7/2/2005 Simmons sent a third party out to inspect my mattress. Mind you, they measure the mattress with a string across the middle of the bed that is held taut with weights on the ends of the string. If the mattress is depressed 1 1/2 inches or more the manufacturer will replace your mattress with another one of equal value. The best way to assure that you get your mattress covered by warranty is to sleep on it for 8 hours right before the representative comes over to inspect the mattress. Well, unless you are very lucky and the man comes over and wakes you up there is a good chance that the foam in the mattress will have bounced back somewhat. Now, we can’t have that can we? I found a better way. Some of you might think this is cheating but who cares. I put about 200 lbs of weights right smack dab in the middle of my mattress and I didn’t take those weights off until the moment I answered the door. The more weight the better. I think if I hadn’t done this I wouldn’t have gotten another mattress.
On 7/18/2005, I didn’t get what I really wanted which was to get my money back, but I did get another mattress which my roommate is buying from me. I am no longer married to Simmons in any way. The Simmons rep who handled this and the salesman at the mattress store took their time in getting back with me too. The Simmons rep got something like 6 messages from me to call him back. I even called Simmons headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia and they emailed him. Finally, I dialed *70 in front of his phone number so he wouldn’t know who was calling and he finally answered his cell phone. I had his number saved from the time he called me back in January 2005. I had been calling him for 2 weeks! Well, he finally spoke with me and he said that he had told the store a week and a half before that my mattress is covered under warranty and that it was their fault for not calling me back.
My advice is not to take no for an answer when these money hungry mattress companies won’t give you the time of day. Stick up to these people and get what you have coming to you. It is time they stop thinking customers can just be shooed off like insects.
