A few years ago we purchased an Isotonic mattress, and have been very pleased with it so far. The only thing is that the mattress is not particularly thick, and regular fitted sheets (not deep pocket) are almost too big and tend to slide around. I thought perhaps adding a foam mattress pad might add just enough dimension to help my fitted sheets fit tighter, and hey, what the heck, add a little more cush to our Isotonic memory foam bed. I happened to see this Simmons Beautyrest Thera-Foam Mattress Pad on sale at Wal-Mart, so I threw it in the cart. Here’s the scoop on this mattress pad:

This Simmons Beautyrest Thera-Foam Mattress Pad is not the egg-crate type, or the kind with a wavy pattern. This one features a thick foam with rectangular cuts. It is very uniform in appearance. Which puzzles me, because the label on the package declares “anatomically zoned.” So help me, I can’t see any different “zones” on this mattress pad. It is absolutely uniform to my eyes. The pattern is the same no matter how you place this mattress pad. Now this isn’t a problem for me at all, in fact I prefer it that way. I always thought that whole “anatomically zoned” thing was overrated anyway. The graphic drawing of the mattress pad on the label shows it accurately however, with a uniform rectangular pattern.
This mattress pad measures 1 and 3/4 in. thick. My queen size one is 58 in. X 75 in., just a tad smaller than my queen mattress, which is just right. The foam itself is 100% polyurethane. Should cleaning be necessary, just spot clean by washing by hand in a bath tub with warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse, squeeze out the water, and hang or drape to dry. Machine washing and drying is not recommended.
Something else to be aware of - it is suggested that if this pad will be used by a young child or incontinent adult, use a vinyl mattress pad over the foam. Also, polyurethane foam is flammable - so watch out for smoking in bed! It’s okay to use an electric blanket though.
The Simmons Beautyrest Thera-Foam Mattress Pad comes compressed and rolled up in a zippered plastic bag. The informational insert says you should allow a few days for it to completely return to its proper size, and that there may be a slight odor when the package is opened. I could barely detect any smell at all, so that wasn’t an issue. I took it out of the package and let it lie flat for a couple of hours before making the bed. It still had a few bumps in it from being packaged, but it flattened out fine in the made-up bed.
This is available in Full Size (for $16.77), Queen Size ($21.77), King Size ($26.77) and Calif. King (also $26.77). I don’t see that this mattress pad is available in twin size.
~ My Experience
As I stated, my Isotonic mattress is fine, and didn’t really need any help in the comfort department, but I was hoping to make it a little thicker with the addition of the foam pad so my fitted sheets would fit tighter - and, okay, add a little more luxury to our mattress.
The foam is a tannish color. Not white, or even off white, but a medium tan. Who cares - it’s always covered up anyway. There really is a lot of foam to this mattress pad. It does indeed seem to have more foam than the ordinary convoluted or egg-crate type pads.
I put it directly on my bare mattress, and then put a protective fabric mattress pad over the foam pad. The Simmons Beautyrest Thera-Foam Mattress Pad is just slightly smaller than my queen sized mattress, so it fits perfectly. My fitted bottom sheet did indeed fit a little tighter with the additional foam. That extra 1 and 3/4″ height from the SImmons pad almost made my entire bed look taller! I can notice the additional height getting into the bed as well.
So how does it feel? Heavenly! The tightly spaced rectangular pattern is extremely comfortable. You can move your legs back and forth over it and really not feel any pattern at all. This is perfect for me, and just what I was looking for. My already comfortable bed is now even MORE comfortable, and a little higher as well. I haven’t found the foam pad to be too hot, or anything of that nature.
Another plus is that this Simmons mattress pad stays put! No bunching up or moving around. Nothing worse than a foam pad that slides all over the place. No worries with this one.
~ Final Thoughts
If you’d like to add a little luxury to an already comfortable bed, need to beef up a mattress, or perhaps are looking for an inexpensive way to relieve some pressure points as you sleep without springing for a whole new mattress, the Simmons Beautyrest Thera-Foam Mattress Pad might be just the ticket. It is VERY thick, and adds a cushy yet supportive layer to your bedding.
