Needed a new bed because, well, when we bought our original Sealy queen we only bought it for 2. However, after 10 years, we now had 2 young kids who always seemed to end up in bed. Let me tell you, a queen just does not cut it. So based on all the review I read, reading a lot from the E-opinions community, we ended up getting a Plush Simmons Backcare Eastern King. I

Why the Simmons backcare? Well, the brands we were considering was Serta, Sealy, and Simmons. Within each brands, we were looking at different models.

The new Sealy’s did not feel as comfortable to us. Plus if you have any sort of plush top on the bed, it makes it a really thick bed because Sealy’s are designed to allow you to flip the bed, so the plush top would be on both sides. Good idea, probably, but in the 10 years I owned our old bed, we probably flipped it 6 times and half the times was when we were moving the bed. We didn’t think we would flip the bed much if it were a King.

The Serta perfect sleeper felt very good, we almost went with it. However, there were some negative reviews about it being squeaky and breaking down after a while. It is a bed that should be considered.

The Simmons beautyrest apparently had a lot of defects and returns several years ago. Body impressions easily formed on the bed. However with the change over to the no flip mattress, this problem was improved. The no flip Beautyrest has thicker coils. The selling point of the Beautyrest is that the coils are individually wrapped and you won’t feel the other person move. Yet, in all my time in my old bed, I never had a problem with feeling the movement of my wife leaving the bed. Perhaps I am a sound sleeper. Didn’t want to go with the Beautyrest because I think the individually wrapped coil design has potential for causing body impressions and that motion separation is not that important.

To test the importance of feeling movement, my wife and I went to the store and lay down next to each other. We each took turns getting off the bed. On the Simmons Backcare 20, I could not really notice my wife leaving. On the 30, I did notice. We ended up with the Backcare 20 plush. The backcare felt firm enough for my wife and the plush top was soft enough for me. We considered a pillow top, but decided against it because of issues with durability of the bed. The plush top was good enough. It is pretty soft in its own right.

The only negative is that the edge support on the bed is wimpy. There was a more expensive model with foam encasing the edge, but it cost several hundred more and was the 30 firmness, which was too firm for me. It is not too big of a deal as you typically don’t sleep on the edge. Most beds don’t have the foam encasing of the edges, it is more prevalent in the expensive brands.

So far, so good, after two weeks on the bed, no back pain and very comfortable bed. Sleeps four comfortably. If you have young kids that end up in your bed, trust me, get a king bed. It will be the best decision you ever make.

The bed is fairly tall compared to our old bed. We ended up getting a bed frame that is 4 ” off the ground versus the standard 7 ” and the bed sits about 24″ off the ground.

Not all kings are the same. If you want a wide bed, make sure to get the Eastern king. If you want a long bed, get the California king. We wanted an eastern king, but in California, they assume the King bed you order is the California king, unless you tell them otherwise. Plus, you can only buy sheets for a california king in california. Thankfully there is the internet.

One thing to keep in mind is that mattress salesman are like used car salesmen. They ended up selling us a teflon coat protectant on the mattress. It is absolutely worthless. Tried testing it and water soaks right through. There is a lifetime warranty on the bed, so I guess after 10 years, I could stain the bed and get a new mattress. Most stores promise the lowest price or 5% back, but no two stores carry the same name mattress. The same model will be called two different things in two stores, so there is a hard time comparing. Prices are not firm, you can bargain in most stores if you want. Almost everyone gives the bed frame for free even if it is not advertised that they do.
