Okay here’s the deal.
I was the biggest fan of the select comfort beds. I INSISTED on getting one because I love the concept and after trying them several times at a local store, we finally ordered ours.
The bed arrived and I spent the entire day trying to get comfortable. I started with the sleep number that I was given at the store. From there I used the process over and over again to find a comfortable number. The problem for me was this:
When the bed is on or around it’s firmest setting (90 - 100) it feels kinda like a regular mattress. Only problem is, for me 90 - 100 feels like laying on a cement floor. Then when I get the bed soft enough to feel comfortable (anywhere in the 45 - 65 range) it ends up just feeling like a bouncy air mattress. Very similar to my aerobed which we pull out of the closet for our kid’s sleepovers.
Bottom line?
For me, it wasn’t so much that the bed was the worst thing I’ve ever felt. It was more of a feeling of: “If I paid $2100 for a mattress, it better be really $@#$%*& comfortable” ya know? This bed was just okay, and I had to return it simply because I couldn’t go to bed night after night, knowing I had paid $2k for this mattress.
Mattress buying is TOTALLY a matter of personal choice. My father-in-law, LOVES his select comfort bed and is in complete shock that we didn’t like ours.
Advice:
Buy this bed if you’ve just got to try it for yourself. Don’t trust the comfort level in the stores, because I realized that you can’t get super comfy and relaxed with the sales person right in front of you. Returning the bed has been a super simple process for us. They charged us $200 to have their delivery people come back and pick it up for us. So, lesson learned. It’s not select comfort’s fault, it’s not our fault, it just didn’t work for us and we feel great about our purchase of a “regular” simmons beautyrest.
