Love it now after memory foam self upgrade
Positive Only bed to adjust to two separate comfort levels
Cons: Had to spend $130 for a memory foam topper and radiating heat from air chamber
I bought the queen-sized Select Comfort 5000 in September 2007. I was ready to return it the next day when I woke up feeling like an arthritic 90-year old man. Being a side sleeper, my shoulder was clunking, and my back was stiff. My old mattress never caused this discomfort.
I didn’t give up on the mattress because my wife liked it. Gotta keep her happy. Our solution: Dump the cheap foam that comes with the mattress and replace it with a 3-inch Sealy memory foam topper from Overstock for about $130. It fit snuggly inside the mattress. Wow! What an amazing difference. I’m convinced I now have a near-perfect bed. It’s like an adjustable Tempur-Pedic!
I was also concerned about the heat radiating from the air chamber, but the 3-inch topper seems to insulate me from the heat. It’s no longer a factor.
It’s sad I had to make this modification, but it made a huge difference. Without it, I would have returned the bed. Select Comfort should wake up and make this memory foam modification standard on all products, especially considering the $1750 purchase price.
Not worth it!
Positive None
Cons: The bed provided no real support, and dealing with the company was trying.
My husband and I bought a sleep number bed on the strong recommendation of my parents, but we were very dissatisfied with the product. The foam padding along the outside of the mattress meant that the middle part sagged if you picked a sleep number that was too soft. That meant it was more like sleeping in a hammock than sleeping on a softer bed. We were also displeased with the company’s response when we tried to return the bed. The representative was very rude, and the whole thing was a huge hassle. Take our advice and spend some time shopping for the right traditional mattress.
Now we both have bad backs
Positive Better than sleeping on the floor.
Cons: Gives me my first ever bad back, neither of us sleep well.
We have a regular bed in our home in Florida with and since buying that bed neither myself or my girlfriend had back problems or any problems sleeping. Then one month ago we rented an apartment in Houston, the landlord left his sleep number bed as he didn’t like it. WELL….. we don’t either!!! My girlfriend gets a bad back and for the first time in my life, so do I. They say that the sleep number bed is clinically proven, but I wonder how??? My girlfriend is an MD and needs her sleep, the sleep number doesn’t help. The money would be far better spent on a good quality regular mattress. I can’t wait to get back to our bed in Florida!!!
I’d rather sleep in my Honda Odyssey!
Positive None for anyone over 6 ft. and 200lbs.
Cons: Uncomfortable, cheaply made, small air chambers.
Bought the California King and experienced all of the problems listed here. For anyone tall or over 200lbs., here is what you can look forward to:
1. Rolling to the middle of “death valley” to the $3 foam piece between the two air chambers, especially if you and your wife have different firmness settings.
2. A “soft” firmness setting that is achieved for larger people by creating some sort of small hammock configuration. Making it impossible to get out of bed.
3. Random increases or decreases in firmness.
4. Sleeping with your legs 2″ higher than your torso.
5. Cannot tie your shoes by sitting on the edge of the bed because the side of the bed is essentially a $4 piece of foam.
6. Sore shoulders if you sleep on your side.
Overall I would have to say this is the WORST bed I’ve ever had. The only nights I sleep well is when my daughter comes in to sleep with mom and I go to her $199 twin bed from some cheapo factory outlet.
love this bed!
Positive Its so very comfy…could spend more time if I didnt have to work
Cons: We needed new sheets…not a problem..I like new sheets
We got our bed in the beginning of Aug and I have more energy and less aches and pains than I used to..its well worth the money.Hubby sleeps better too..it is a bit warm but its worth the trade off and we can keep the furnace down lower..we are lucky our sleep number is 65 for both of us..We did have trouble with the pump this month but a new one was sent out after one phone call.Hubby replaced it and it works fine now…Hubby and I are very happy with our extended queen and our cats are too.We got new sheets for it at Wal mart that fit perfectly..California king sized..I would suggest this to anyone with back pain…our old bed gave us a backache..
Get King size only
Positive If your bedside is large enough, it is so much better than a regular bed.
Cons: Beds divided into two are not large enough for comfort.
We bought the queen size bed, and while it is comfortable, I am putting it in my guest room and no longer using for our bedrorom.
The beds are divided into two section…so you can customize your side of the bed….well when you divide a queen into two what you end up with is less than a single size on your bedside. I feel like when I turn over at night I am going to fall off the bed because my sleep area is smaller than a twin bed. I would never have gotten the queen had I know this. I would have gotten the King size so the two sides were at least the size of a twin bed each.
Finally no back pain
Positive Comfort,
Quality construction,
Good value,
Easy to assemble,
Easy to move
Cons: Retains more heat than old bed,
Slides around on foundation easier than traditional mattresses
I’m very happy with the Sleep Number 5000. It was a breeze to set up, and we were sleeping in it hours after it was delivered.
I’ve always had problems with low back pain, and was never able to bend over to make the bed without holding on to something in the mornings. I was amazed at how pain free I am after getting this new bed.
It’s also great to be able to adjust the firmness on both sides of the bed since I weigh much less than my husband.
I found the price very comparable to the higher end regular mattresses, so for the added benefits of the Sleep Number, I found it a great buy.
I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new bed.
Blue Review
Positive Am sleeping better, but…
Cons: It’s the squeakiest bed in the west!
Kind of a sensitive subject, but I dearly wish I would have had this information before I plunked down a couple grand on a bed.
I have had a Sleep Number 5000 (King) for several months. To get straight to the point, if you:
1) Have housemates
2) Do more than sleep in your bed
well, it won’t take long for #1 to learn about #2. This is the noisiest bed imaginable. Even tho it’s pretty comfortable to sleep in (nothing terribly remarkable), I don’t want to worry about this noise problem until my kids grow up and move out. I very much regret buying the bed for this reason.
Poor Customer Service
Positive Very comfortable when working
Cons: No local support, poor manufacturing quality.
My bed arrived with a defective pump. I had to wait several days to get a replacement mailed to me. No local support available despite dozens of dealers in the area. Two years and two months later the same part fails again. Must wait for a new pump by mail again. This is junk.
Definitely worth a try!
Positive Separate firmness controls. Good body support. Much lighter in weight than a waterbed.
Cons: None. We do worry about potential sagging due to foam mattress sides. Time will tell.
It’s hard to write a mattress review because we all have separate needs and desires. In our case, my wife and I have slept on a tube-type water bed for years. It was time to move on. The Sleep Comfort Sleep Number 5000 was the answer. (We have a very nice, solid wood queen bed frame from Sundance. We wanted a larger bed without having to dump our beautiful bed frame; so, we bought the ‘extended’ queen 5000, which equates to an ‘olympic’ queen; i.e., 6″ wider than a queen, halfway towards a king. The 5000 fit into our frame perfectly!) So far, we are very happy. We believe people who are used to advanced water beds will love this bed. We also understand that people who are used to inner spring mattresses will have to take a leap of faith. The leap is worth it!
Hammock Effect
Positive Return policy is good so you can try it out.
Cons: Uneven sides, not comfortable, sways in the middle (dual chamber model). Expensive for cheap parts.
I tried this bed for about 6 weeks but just did not find it comfortable. The first night I slept on it I woke up with the worst backache–like camper’s back from sleeping on the ground. The salesman told me my back had to adjust to the mattress, and the next night was a little better, but I never had a really comfortable night. I had the queen size with dual air chambers and even though set on the same sleep number, the sides were always uneven and dipped in the middle. I finally settled on number 45 because a higher number seemed too firm, but anything under about 55 would give a “sway back or hammock effect” to the bed in the middle, with the sides higher. I have since bought a Duxiana bed–very expensive, but incredibly comfortable and I love it. I figure the amount of hours I spend in bed during my life, a good night’s sleep is worth it.
Not a good choice
Positive helps back problems- at first
Cons: gives you new back problems, cheap material, slopes towards the middle.
My boyfriend and I bought it. We liked it at first. Now, we fall towards the middle, after only couple months of sleeping on it. We were shocked at the quality of the material. Even more surprised that it’s just a glorified air mattress!!!!
Yes, it has helped with his back problems. Now, I’m having problems because of it sloping towards the middle and not being able to sleep on my back (without leaning towards one side).
Would I recommend this bed to anyone or my worst enemy? No!!!! I’ve already told people not to buy it. For the money you pay for this crap, it’s not worth it!!!
We are not pleased at all with our purchase. We spent good money on this, only to curse at it every night and every morning.
Don’t buy it.
Positive Comfortable when operational.
Cons: Poor quality, overpriced, and overrated. Customer service is non-existent.
Because it’s still basically an air mattress, it is susceptible to tiny leaks which is not only to locate, but the company has the lousiest customer service AND support for their products. We located a leak emanating from the PLASTIC connection (valve) to the mattress, and the company wanted an exorbitant amount for a replacement. Also note that the air hose susceptible is of poor quality and is susceptible to stretching. Merely have the sales person unzip the top cover and you can see for yourself.
This bed is awful
Positive None
Cons: Hard to set up, hard to get out of
What nobody tells you when you buy this thing is that if your sleep number is low (what is low varies for different people but I would say below 60 or so) the air chamber is so deflated that you practically have to climb out of the bed or re-inflate it enough so you are not left climbing out of the crater it creates. Thinking back on my experience with these beds at little Mall store I remember getting on the bed, having the salesperson lower the number to what I thought was right and then, before I got out, he/she demonstrated how you could easily change the setting (i.e., they re-inflated it so I wouldn’t realize this is a problem. I do not recommend this bed. My wife and I had it for the free 30-day trial and sent it back within a week or so after we could stand it no more.
It’s fine if you don’t want to be “close” to your bedmate!
Positive It is comfortable in the ideal situations.
Cons: As it gets older, it really gets out of shape.
Very expensive.
We’ve had our bed for 3 years now. The first week, I hated it. My back ached terribly and that wasn’t a problem I’d previously had. My daughter who used to sell them told me how to adjust it and that hasn’t been a problem since. I wasn’t told at the store how to adjust it. It seems just recently the sides have started to bulge. I had a problem with my back and I didn’t know where it came from and started tracking. I realized the nights when my hubby wanted to spoon, I woke up with terrible back pain. The weight displacement changes my sleep number if my Hubby rolls closer to me and causes my back to hurt anytime he does that. This is not a good thing. I am trying to decide if I want to move this bed to the guest room and get something else for us. I’m not telling my hubby not to spoon if I want to stay married. Also I wasn’t aware of the mold problems. My hubby is asthmatic and has been having trouble in the past few months. I will be checking that.
careful, you’ll fall in the hole
Positive It’s light and easy to move. Fun to play with. Mine was also free.
Cons: You are likely to fall between the mattresses if you stray off your side.
I was given a free queen sized select comfort mattress, the entire set, when a friend of a friend died. I needed a mattress and the family had one that had rarely been used as it was the guest bed.
It’s really fun to play with but completely unsatisfactory for sleep purposes. My partner and I do not sleep on clearly defined sides of the bed. One or the other of us generally falls in between air mattresses and ends up with a sore neck or back the next morning. If you set the comfort level higher, to help offset the mattress’s tendency to sink on the edges, you feel like you are sleeping on a hill. When I sleep by myself I like to sleep in the middle of the bed or diagonally across it. What misery. This mattress causes more back pain and aggravation than it solves.
I can’t wait until I can afford to buy a new conventional mattress again.
Don’t waste your money
Positive I honestly can’t think of any.
Cons: Expensive
Their commercial boasts that you’ll have the best night sleep of your life and no more back pain, etc. I never woke up with a sore back until I bought the sleep number bed. And the longer you own it the more uncomfortable it gets. Just buy an air mattress because that’s all it is in pretty packaging.
I would never go back to a regular bed
Positive It really works! Feels just like a regular bed, but is more comfortable.
Cons: It takes awhile to figure out your sleep number.
We both love this bed! It took us about a week or so to figure out our sleep number, but once we did we are sleeping more soundly and feel totally rested each morning. It been good for my wife’s arthritis and good for my back. I was pretty disappointed when I saw it being constructed since it doesn’t look like much goes in to it. It really does seem like a lot of money to spend for the bed when you see the actual materials, but now it doesn’t matter because it really works! We sleep great and will never go back. We have been thinking about getting one for our guest room.
I was recently transferred and had to go into temporary housing. We told the company to forget about the bed because we would bring our own. We rented the smallest trailer U-Haul has, took the bed apart and and traveled from Boise Idaho to Minnetonka Minnesota. This was the easiest transfer ever since we sleep great in our new environment with our Sleep Number Bed.
Frame replaced
Positive Great customer care.
Cons: None at this time.
I called in to complain about a bed bought in 2002 and that the support beams were sagging badly. They were very nice on the phone and replaced everything to bring my bed up to date. They had changed the design in 2003 to resolve this issue and replaced all my equipment at NO cost to me. It doesn’t get any better than that.
THE BEST SLEEP THAT MONEY CAN BUY
Positive Separate comfort for me and my husband
Cons: NONE
I researched beds for 6 months before settling on Sleep Comfort. I am so glad that I bought this bed. It was worth every penny. Looking at the cost of a good bed, this is a comparative price.
I am so happy with how well I sleep and how comfortable it is EVERY NIGHT. On my ride home after work and through cooking dinner, all I can think about is when can I go to bed.
I recommend this bed to EVERY ONE
Well - it’s better than a waterbed!
Positive Comfortable
Cons: Expensive but what isn’t these days?
Caught between a rock and a hard spot. We needed a new mattress set because the waterbed mattress was attacked by our cat. I like a hard mattress and my wife likes a soft mattress. We decided on a sleep number because we could still sleep in the same bed AND keep the waterbed furniture. Set up was easy, it took awhile to get used to for no other reason than it wasn’t a waterbed. I love this thing and so does the wife. We’ve had it about 4 months now and have to set the alarm on weekends so we don’t sleep all day - I am not joking. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it more than another quality box mattress set? - probably not if I was going to have to get two firmness types of mattress and get rid of our bedroom furniture. I haven’t unzipped everything to check for mold or anything like everyone else is reporting. Maybe I should - but with a 20 year warranty — why?
Sleep Number Con is just that a con!
Positive .There is nothing good about this so called bed a miserable thing to sleep
Cons: caused severebackproblems andImean causedwill do everything I can to prove this in court if necessary
I have had this bed for 10 years. It was changed by the company at 5 years after many complaints.
I hate this bed. I have pain so bad in my back I can barely walk. No evidence of any disease other than extreme muscle imbalances from this badly made bed.
I put the number at 50 when I go to bed and two hours later it is 90 and hurts every bone in sight.I will soon just sell this con of a bed and find a real bed for real people.
It’s No Miracle Bed
Positive adjustable firmness, warranty, no flipping - ever!
Cons: price, water bed feel at lower sleep numbers
It’s taken us a couple of months to get accustomed to ours and now we like it (we weren’t sure at first). We’ve also both settled on Sleep Number 45, which makes us wonder how important dual control really was. However, when a 90-pound dog decides to jump up on it, a #45 becomes a #60 (air displacement) so the control is nice then! At lower sleep numbers, it has a real water bed feel to it, which neither of us likes - rolling toward the center, mushy, etc. Give it some time and experiment for a few nights at different numbers. It took us a while to like it. I really like the memory-foam pillow (optional); my wife doesn’t.
Not so great
Positive If its not comfortable how can it have any pro’s. Its a bed!
Cons: Uncomfortable
Have owned for 6 months, not that comfortable. Bed is hard to get out of. My wife who is 5′8″ and 130#s says it hasnt helped her back quit hurting at all. I am 6′3 and 250 and I dont like the bed. I kept thinking I just wasnt used to it so we never returned it. I still am not used to it because it really isnt any more comfortable than our very old bed was. Bed looks wavy when its made due to center foam not being the same height as the mattresses on both sides for the individuals. Paid way to much for this…
30 days demo isn’t long enough and I have heard the charge you to return it.
TERRIBLE BED!
Positive NONE, NOT EVEN THAT COMFORTABLE
Cons: MOLD,SAGGING, SLOPING, LEAKING, PLASTIC FRAME FALLS APART, POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE, CHEAP MATERIALS, OVERPRICED
We owned a Select Comfort 5000 for aproximately three years. It sagged in the middle unless the two sides were inflated to around the same firmness. The plastic bed base came apart when set upon the metal frame. MOLD grew within the first year. I took the company’s suggestion and sprayed once a month to take care of the mold. That was a temporary solution to a permanent problem. My husband and I started having allergy symptoms and he developed near daily headaches. We attribute these symptoms to the mold problem. Our bed now lies in the county dump, where it should have been in the first place. Select Comfort has the poorest customer service I have ever experienced! Uncaring and indifferent, not willing to cooperate an any manner. Also, when we took the bed apart to take it to the dump we discovered massive deterioration of the foam pieces. EXTREMELY cheap materials. Please, please don’t waste your hard earned money on such a disappoinment.
Terra
Select Comfort simoly GREAT!
Positive Easy assembly and very comfortable
Cons: Requires deeper pocket sheets than I had.
Have had this wonderful bed for over a year ( I am 80 years old and have a bad back ). I have found it to be the best bed that I have ever had…and I have had many. It is comfortable, easy to get in and out of and I no longer have to see a Chipractor.
So-so Mattress and dishonest customer service
Positive the gadget is fun to play with
Cons: beds frequently have deflating issues, the customer service is not trustworthy
We bought this bed because Consumer Reports gave it a good review.
My side of the bed was deflating overnight. I called and Rep #1 said he would mail a replacement part and extend the 30-day trial. I called back 2 days later to ask them to fax confirmation of the trial period extension. Rep #2 found no record of it. But Rep #2 promised to extend the trial period and to fax me confirmation. 5 days later, I called and Rep #3 found no record of a trial period extension.
I scheduled a date for someone to pick up the bed for return. I was nervous they would never note the trial extension and we’d be stuck with the bed.
The part Rep #1 sent arrived several weeks later, only a few days before the end of our trial period.
We received no apology and saw no effort to help convince us to keep the bed.
We were charged $150 for them to come pick up the bed.
Not worth it!
Positive When my wife throws it out of the window, it probably won’t hurt anybody.
Cons: Sleep number changes, hampers sex life.
Why spend a ton of money for a sleep number bed when the number can change 15 points from night to morning? That’s what their tech support told me was normal. OK, so air does expand when it warms up; however, for the cost of this bed, I would expect it to be automatically compensated.
I also don’t like the barrier between the sides. It hampers our sex life.
Insomnia Number Bed 3000
Positive With persistance, the product is returnable.
Cons: Feels like trying to sleep on a bubble. Flimsy foam support, waayyy overpriced.
The best piece of advice I received during this entire ordeal was from my wife who suggested on night one, that we should “hang on to our old mattress just in case”. Well three nights later at one o clock in the morning there I was, cranky, sleep deprived and dragging our old mattress back into the bedroom. There was no level of adjusting that could be done that prevented my wife and I from rolling into one another or from me waking up stiff and tired. Not only that, the rubber-backed sham that was in between the mattress and foundation gave off an incredibly pervasive rubber odor. By the third night the bedsheets smelled like they had done time in a tire factory. It took three calls to customer service in order to receive the return labels but thankfully the bed has been returned.
DO NOT BUY
Positive The bed is comfortable initially (which is why I bought it)
Cons: Air pressure becomes less reliable; bad customer service
I purchased one of Select Comfort’s upper-end beds (dual-chambered) about 5 months ago. Here are my current problems: the middle of the bed has sagged noticeably to the point where the bed is becoming U-shaped and in one chamber, the firmness declines during the night (i.e., I set it at 80 before I go to bed and when I wake up, it feels like it’s 45). I called Select Comfort, and basically, their policy is that they’ll talk you through the problem (you still have to be your own bed mechanic) and will send parts on as needed basis. The fact is that the amount of time required — both tinkering with the bed and waiting for the parts — is a tremendous hassle should your bed malfunction. Learn from my experience: it’s not worth it. Whatever additional comfort provided by these beds (I’m not sure there is any) is certainly not worth the trouble when something goes awry.
Greatly improved back pain
Positive Significant relief of back and orthopedic pain, varying levels of firmness
Cons: Cost
Two years ago, we waffled about which mattress to buy. Cost nudged us toward a Simmons Beautyrest pillowtop–a decision we regretted immediately. I have moderate-to-severe back pain, and it was evident, right away, that we’d made the wrong choice. But because it was a significant investment—one we thought would last a good decade–we toughed it out as long as we could. When I started to look forward to getting *out* of bed in the morning, I knew we couldn’t postpone change any longer. The quality-of-life cost of keeping the Beautyrest exceeded the cost of a new bed.
Enter the Select Comfort mattress.
Like any new bed, the Select Comfort mattress is tricky to get used to–body memory makes even a bad mattress feel “right,” so adjusting to one that allows for proper body alignment takes a few nights. Add to that the fact that the Select Comfort mattress allows for varying levels of firmness, and it makes for a few nights of wondering, “Did I make the right choice?”
But give it time–because, yes—it IS the right choice. By the third night, we’d figured out our “numbers,” and waking up feeling enormously better than on a conventional mattress.
Select Comfort — Pillow top DOESN’T last; $410++ to replace
Positive Comfortable for 4-5 years.
Cons: Pillowtop collapses within a few years; over $400 to replace. NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!
Select Comfort has been quite a disappointment. We probably got 5 good years out of this bed, a hefty price for 5 years of comfort. It has gotten progressively more uncomfortable over time, with no mercy for those painful “pressure points,” and it’s finally reached a point where I just can’t get a decent night’s sleep on it. When we bought the bed nine years ago, the salespeople really pushed that *wonderful 20-year warranty.* But, of course, they never mentioned that the pillowtop will collapse, and it will cost more than $400 to replace it. No matter how much air I put in or let out of this mattress, the bed is awful. I’ve tried some expensive mattress covers to compensate for the collapsed pillowtop (memory foam, etc.), but nothing seems to make it better. I contacted Customer Service, and they say they can replace the mattress cover for $410 plus tax and shipping. No, thanks!!! I’ll NEVER buy from Select Comfort again.
The worst mattress I’ve ever slept on
Positive It made me appreciate my old mattress!
Cons: no back support. Cheaply made. Valley in the middle of bed.
I got this mattress second-hand, from my father. He and my stepmother tried it for her bad back. After sleeping on it for almost a month, they realized that there was just no way they were ever going to get a decent night’s sleep on it.
Seeing the un-helpful return policy, they decided to try and sell it but were unable to, and gave it to me.
If you happen to be a very still sleeper, and can figure out how to sleep exactly in the right spot and not move all night, *maybe* this would be comfortable- but my girlfriend and I ended up in the valley in the middle of the bed, between the 2 air bladders, for 2 nights straight and gave it up.
It was *slightly* more comfortable if you put plywood under it for support, instead of the box spring- but it didn’t make much difference. We went back to our old bed. Fortunately it was still in the guest room!
We tried all different “sleep numbers” and it didn’t matter.
My dad got a tempur-pedic and loves it. That will be my next bed. My dogs didn’t even like this one!!!

-
Very comfortable bed
Positive -adjustable firmness
-cushy pillowtop
-hypo allergenic
-light weight
-easy to clean
Cons: -costs ALOT
-the foundation was hard to assemble
I bought the queen size model online after first trying it out at the mall. I agree with other reviewers that you feel alot of buyers’ remorse after seeing what your $1800 just bought, but after sleeping soundly for the first time in years, I got over the cost.
The owners’ manual says it may take several nights or weeks to find your sleep number. I must’ve just gotten lucky. I set it to 45 and fall asleep and stay asleep all night. No tossing or turning. My wife is having a slightly tougher time adjusting, but overall she says she sleeps better.
It may be pricey, but it’s worth it to me.
OVERPRICED JUNK
Positive I cannot give any pros to the sleep # bed, only cons.
Cons: HOT, Mattress topper poor quality.Poor customer service. Mold in mattress.
We bought this mattress thinking it would be very comfortable for both my husband and I BUT
Might as well just buy an air mattress, with an automatic pump. You will have the same thing and save A LOT of $$.
After two years my husband and I both were sleeping in holes where the pillow top had compacted. The top of our bed looked like rolling hills. It is also very hot. No place for your body heat to escape.
After 3 years of sleeping on this, we now own a very comfortable mattress, will never own one of these again and will never recommend it to anybody.
Also, went to the store trying to get some help on this and they handed us a card with the 800# and got us out of there as fast as they could!
If you want the worst backache ever…
Positive 20 year warranty is only for defective beds.
Cons: loses air, pricey, customer support, return policy
If you want the worst backache and body ache that lasts all day, and gets worse in the morning, or, if you prefer sleeping in a softer coffin-like bed, then this is the bed for you. If you plan on returning this, you’d better do it quickly. 30 days passes fast. Not the bed for fibromyalsia patients, as you will hurt worse than ever. The hard foam surrounding the air chamber will give you 1 less foot of mattress on each side, top and bottom. Something to take into consideration if you are tall, or sleep with a partner. You may be able to sleep on those hard foam sides, if you like a hard bed, and raise the number to the highest level. Memory foam and feather beds on top of this air mattress don’t seem to help. Sleeping with a back brace on is another option, and probably the best solution to feel better in the mornings with a sleep number bed.
Total Junk
Positive The only pros turned out to be the cons as well. Junk just junk
Cons: WILL NOT HONOR WARRANTY..Warning the bed will break within the first year or 3 max
Paid for three beds, 2 queens and a king all at once. EVERY last one has had parts which had to be replaced within the first year. The mattress cover is made terribly and comes apart at the seams. AND THE BIGGEST —The plastic BED FOUNDATION has broken 3 times as well! My husband and I are retired teachers and not very big people. 3 times the foundation has cracked and then broke on two of the beds.
Select comfort told us not only would they NOT send us another replacement after the last broken part but made us pay for the return shipping on the bad frame. So much for a warranty. Paid for three beds, 2 queens and a king all at once. EVERY last one has had parts which had to be replaced
DISASTER WITH NO END IN SIGHT
Positive Nothing about this experience makes me want to offer a PRO
Cons: Experienced 4 nights of torture before sending it back!
I bought the Select Comfort 5000 Queen and from the wall damage that was done by the installers through the four nights of absolute nightmarish sleep I am thoroughly disgusted with Select Comfort. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! NO SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM! NO SLEEP!
The bed is an uncomfortable marshmallow surrounded by a hard edge that hurts to climb over. Their suggestion is to tough it out for 4 to 5 months and let the foam edge deteriorate enough that it become soft.
Their alternative is to pack it (at my own expense) ship it (at my own expense) and insure it (at my own expense) to get a partial refund in 4 to 6 weeks. In the meantime they have lost my former mattress and I must go buy another product (at my own expense) while waiting for my promised refund. Given their lack of credibility thus far it looks like lawyers are needed to get back to where I was before I purchased this disaster.
AVOID THIS PRODUCT. Only buy it if you are into masochism since there is no service from the Customer Service Department.
Don’t buy a Sleep Number Bed
Positive Staff responds to our complaints and keeps sending new parts.
Cons: The bed is uncomfortable. Their advertising is a fraud.
My husband and I purchased a sleep-number bed three years ago. We would never buy one again — and wish we could get our money back on the one we have. Instead, the company responds only with replacement parts, which solve the current issue, but never really solve the main problem — the bed is cheaply made and poorly designed. We are not obese or put undue strain on the mattress. My husband, however, outweighs me by 100 pounds, so the adjustments on either side of the bed are quite different. That’s where the trouble begins. Despite their claims that one person can be at a “40″ while the other is at a “90″, for instance, doesn’t address what happens between the two halves of the bed. I’ll tell you: You get a crater that feels like you’ve dropped off a cliff if you venture into the middle of the bed. This isn’t promoting a better night’s sleep!!!!
Uncomfortable bed; good customer service
Positive Improved comfort over my inner-spring mattress. Excellent customer service.
Cons: Hard edges and middle. Huge weight transfer.
My traditional inner-spring mattress was giving me significant mid-back pain. We bought into the Sleep Number bed claims of reduced back pain. I do have to say, that after about the first week (quite uncomfortable adjustment period) my back did start feeling better, but not as much as I had hoped. Unfortunately, there are many downsides they don’t tell you about. First, we purchased a queen size bed, but don’t be deceived, you must sleep on it like it is two side-by-side twins. That is because there is a very hard border/frame that the air mattresses sit in. The edges of the bed are VERY uncomfortable to either sit on or sleep near. This includes the very middle of the bed as well. If you happen to have children that ever join you in your bed, do not get a sleep number. Also, the bed really is like sleeping on an old-school air mattress. If one person sits down on it while you are laying down, you will be launched. Much worse than a traditional inner-spring.
After about 2-weeks we decided to return the mattress. The return process was extremely easy, as advertised and hassle-free.
After 7 years, I still love this bed
Positive Adjustable, durable, very comfortable, easy to move
Cons: The hard plastic foundation creaks against our wooden bed frame
I’ve had my sleep number bed for 7 years and still love it.
I love that I’m able to adjust the mattress to my desired level, and my husband (a fan of water beds) sets his very soft. I usually set my side fairly firm, but it’s nice to soften it up in colder weather (you can kind of sink in, and it fees very warm).
After 7+ years it has held up very well (no problems at all), even with a large dog that regularly jumps on it.
Other beds normally bother my back, but not this one. After a long trip, I’m always happy to come home to my sleep number.
The cost was not any more than I would have paid for a nice traditional mattress, and it offers more comfort and versatility than any traditional could.
Worst customer service *ever*
Positive It hasn’t burst into flames…yet.
Cons: Overpriced, cheaply made, not durable, amazingly bad customer service.
Very nice store, great salesperson, good demonstration of the product and a product that seemed to meet our needs. All things that made the buying decision fairly easy. For a short period of time the product seemed to be everything it was demonstrated to be, but that would be short-lived indeed. Any problem with the pump renders the bed useless. Getting any sort of support from either the store, or the customer service level is beyond impossible. There is simply no credible level of customer service at all. They seem proud to say that they have no trained technical personnel on staff and are very quick to offer solutions involving additional customer expenditure, even as they say they don’t understand what might be causing a malfunction. If it doesn’t involve some sort of new sale, they won’t be there for you. Absolutely my worst customer service experience *ever*!
SLEEP NUMBER 5000
Positive Adjustable for each person. easy to assemble
Cons: not comfortable. Dont’ buy one.
I was astonished to put together this glorified camping mattress. I gave it a try for three years. Tried numbers 30 thru 65. I haven’t had a good nights sleep since I got this bed. I’ve had to see a chiroprator regularly. I can’t believe I spent nearly $2000. It’s a waste. It’s like sleeping in a hole or a rock. You will have to try several pillows (depending on your number) to avoid getting a neck ache.
Just bought a sealy posturpedic plush and I sleep all night now. I wake up and can think more clearly because I’m getting a good nights rest.
Great Bed
Positive Great sleep
Cons: Warranty pro rates over time.
I purchased this bed one month ago. I have not slept this well for years. I dream much more and feel well rested in the morning. It is very comfortable. Even my wife who slept well to begin with noticed a difference and better sleep. I was hesitant to buy after reading the reviews. I cant understand why this bed would get a poor review. This bed is tops and I would recommend spending the extra money on this one.
THIS MATTRESS IS AN EXPENSIVE FLEECING
Positive NONE
Cons: HARD, UNCOMFORTABLE, BUYER BEWARE
I bought the hype and bought the bed. I haven’t had a decent night’s sleep since. The bed is hard even on the so called “softer” settings. I toss and turn all night, looking for a comfortable position (one that I have yet to find). I wake up with aches and pains in places I never felt before the bed and I stay grumpy a lot more often. I usually end up sleeping on the sofa at least one night a week just so I can get some decent sleep. If you are thinking about spending a lot of money on this mattress, try a less costly experiment — buy a regular air mattress, unroll it on the floor, fill it to the max with air then sleep on it a few nights. That’s about the same feeling as sleeping on a Select Comfort mattress.
Words cannot express how much we like this bed
Positive Simple to put together and easy to adjust for personal comfort
Cons: Can’t think of any
To put it simply. We love this bed and will buy one for each of our kids as a wedding gift when they get married. That just about says it all
The Glorified Air Bed
Positive 30 Day in-home trial, looks nice, easy to disassemble
Cons: assembly time, cost, highly over-rated
You’d think that a mattress that costs this much money would be better than a camping air bed! My husband & I have been married 7 years and this was our 5th bed! We were so excited to finally save up enough money to purchase a King size Sleep Number 5000 pillow-top mattress set. It took about 3 (stressful) hours to set up, after which we were certainly in need of a good night’s sleep. The first morning we both woke up with severe headaches; the next day had the same results, so did the next and the next. It didn’t feel like a difference between firm and soft but rather, over-inflated or under-inflated. We tried to sleep on as long as we could but sent it back during the 30 day trial. We were quite upset that we had waited for so long to buy this bed when it has the same level of comfort as our Coleman double thickness air mattress. So disappointing!
My Back Is Killing me!
Positive NONE
Cons: I paid a lot of money for a lot of back pain.
Me and My husband decided to buy a sleep number bed as our christmas present to each other. HA! He sleeps well in it. Me on the other hand…If I have the setting soft for a few nights I’ll wake up with severe lower back pain on my right side. If I set it more firm my whole back feels stiff as if I slept on the ground outside. I’d rather sleep on my couch. I extremely DISLIKE this bed!!!!
I Love This Bed
Positive Comfortable, dual chambers
Cons: Pricey - but worth it
I’ve been sleeping on this bed for about a month now - I love it. I love the dual chambers. I can most definitely feel the difference between sleep numbers. My daughter and I assembled the bed in about an hour.
It’s pricey, but I can honestly say that my sleep quality has improved quite a bit, so I think it’s worth every penny.
An Big Expensive Mistake
Positive NONE
Cons: The most expensive piece of crap
The purchase of this bed has been the biggest purchase mistake we have ever made. I purchased this bed after hearing all ranting advertisements and decided that it was time we get a very comfortable nights rest. It has been the worst bed I have ever owned. I kept it longer than the 30 day trial to give it a chance and it has never lived up to what it claimed to be. I passionately hate the middle foam piece in the king we got. The side foam pieces are a joke. I recently purchased a memory foam topper for this piece of crap and I tell you I have slept better on the memory foam than I have in the three years that I have had it this mistake
I wish my blowup bed would blow up..for good!
Positive Lightweight, easy to move. Before its unreliability, it seems to improve sleep somewhat.
Cons: Terribly expensive for two camping mattresses dressed as one mattress. Very difficult to install. Unreliable.
I have had this tacky blowup mattress for nearly a year now with precious little satisfaction, sleep improvement, pain relief or any benefit whatsoever. When I go to bed at night, there’s no telling where the dual settings will be. I can understand–and have come to expect–leakage in the air chambers. But sometimes the chamber readings go up precipitously and result in a mattress that’s hard as a rock. Other nights the mattress is like sleeping on full laundry bags. There seems to be no way to predict what the next problem will be. When I first got it, I thought I would benefit from the blowup air bags, but it’s turned out to be just another greatly overpriced gimmick.
Less Than What You Expect
Positive Keep Up With The Jones
Cons: If you don’t like it your out $150.00. Return shipping EXPENSIVE.
Read every negative review and they are accurate. The foundation’s appearance is cheap looking. I don’t believe this is a true Queen in size. And, yes it is very expensive to return. $29.95 per box, extra if they come and remove it. I was offered $100 off the purchase price to keep the bed so maybe for those that do like it (?), call and get some $ back. For those that are interested, I STRONGLY recommend you visit a store/showroom first and try those out.
Read before you buy a Sleep Number
Positive Two different settings between soft and firm
Cons: Sinks in the middle and zipper breaks, what 20 year warranty
I bought a pillow top Queen size sleep number bed two years ago. Before one year of having it, I figured it is the worst thing I ever invested in. The middle sinks. The zipper breaks(remind you this is only two year old mattress). I called the manufacture to replace the material with the zipper on it, and they told me $645. What happen to the 20 year warranty. It’s not like I sat there and pulled at this stupid zipper. All I did is put it together like the directions told me. All was in tack. Over two year period the zipper has come apart. And now they won’t replace it unless I give them $645. Trust me, you will loose sleep like I did. Do not buy this bed.
Mold issues
Positive adjustable
Cons: MOLD !
KSTP TV in ST Paul, MN just did an expose on the the growth of mold in these type beds. Select Comfort replied, on air, that “all beds have mold in them”. But looking at the air chamber, the foam pads etc as they displayed them would not be how my bed should be.
Select Comfort’s recommendation is to use a clorine solution and wipe it up periodically.
NOT worth the money
Positive a cute little remote control
Cons: no back support at all
Here’s the jist - I had taken one short nap on a Select Comfort mattress and because my brother and sister-in-law had one, it was the first bed my fiancee and I thought of buying when we decided to get rid of our current bed. We purchased a King size Select Comfort 5000 bed for more than $2300. After the second night of sleeping on it, my back pain was the same an increased as the week went on, so did my fiancee’s. It truly is just a glorified air mattress! The bed has no true support, there is nothing to push back up at your body to alleviate pressure. We’re packing it up tonight and shipping it back tomorrow. We can’t wait for our new bed…an innerspring mattress with all the frills.
Still not sure if I like it!
Positive Easy to Assembly, light and easy to make the bed.
Cons: Not sure what my sleep number is!
I have had the 5000 model for about a week now. The first night I slept pretty well, and then I went to visit my family and screwed up my back on a soft bed. Came back and slept just ok again. Then one night I lowered the remote just a tiny bit and woke up with horrible back aches. Slept on it again last night taking it back up to the firmer level and slept fine, still a little sore from the night before. I am not sure what number is good for me, and am thinking maybe I should have gotten a regular mattress. I will give it another week and then may have to pack it up and actually try and return it! I dread that but I cannot spend $2000 on something that makes my back hurt? Everyone seems to say you have to get used to it, does anyone know how long it takes? Please if anyone has any opinions, please let me know! Thanks.
customer service???
Positive love to sleep on the bed
Cons: pump is trashed it runs on its own
Would not replace faulty pump after 28 months without charging a fee and shipping charges both directions. what a joke. We reported a problem with the pump before the two year warranty was up they have no record of the phone call. The pump will pump up to 80 one day and be at 20 that night. it will pump for no reason at odd times. It needs to be replaced.
Select comfort told us that for 150.00 they would replace it. This was reported before the warranty was up. Now they also tell us that the warranty started form the date purchased not when they delivered it 1 month later. How can the warranty start on something you do not even have yet?
I love the bed but would never consider buying anything from SELECT COMFORT again
Wonderful bed! Well worth the money!
Positive Quiet pump, very comfortable!
Cons: None
We got ours from the refirbished Select Comfort Store online and paid half and still got the standard 20-year warranty. We love it! The air pump is so quiet, especially compared to the next model down. You can barely hear it at all! This bed is awesome!
WHAT A WASTE!
Positive None
Cons: Pain to put together. Customer service jerks you around.
If you want a good mattress save yourself time and money and do not purchase this mattress. The dual chambers they so highly promote are a joke. They don’t tell you when you get them that if there is a difference in your sleep #’s that you will slide down in to what my husband calls “the nest.” I contacted Select Comfort AT LEAST 10 times. I even called the manager at the store where I bought it from. I got a different answer on how to remedy this situation every time. They refused to refund my money because it was outside of the 30 days. They sent different pieces to help with the comfort level! What a joke. I finally had to call the Better Business Bureau before I got anything resolved. To make a long story short, the bed has been returned and the account credited! I would rather sleep on the floor!
Helped my low back pain beyond expectation!
Positive A back saver
Cons: A bit pricey, but well worth it!!!!!
I became disabled 5 years ago. I have been confined to a wheelchair ever since. Unfortunately, wheelchair use can cause extreme low back pain. I have gone through epidural injections and the use of oral pain killers. I have had my Sleep Number bed for almost a month and my back, though not totally relieved, felt 90% better from the first night. Yes, it may be over-priced, but for me, it is a lifesaver.
Sleeping trip through hell
Positive Nothing. Absolutely nothing positive.
Cons: Price is insane.
This 5000 bed is an absolute waste of money and a disaster to a new marriage. My husband bought it and slept on it a year before we got married and really liked it — until he had to share it and the air pockets started to shift around.
I still feel like I am sleeping on one of those little air mattresses at summer camp.
I do have to mention that my lower back is fused due to a bicycle accident. I have a lot of metal rods and pins and cages holding my lower back together. This bed is supposed to be supportive?!? Yeah, right. And twenty years later I still look like I’m 18.
We’re selling the whole set at next weekend’s yard sale. I’d PAY someone to take it away. What a disaster. And as far as having sex on this bed?!? Let’s just say our floor gets a lot more action than the air mattresses.
