We recently purchased a king-sized 5000 bed and frame that had been reconditioned, meaning that the parts had been sent and returned by a previous customer who didn’t like it. The Mattress, foam and all padding were brand new…only the plastic foundation beams, air chambers & compressor were used.
We selected this based on a neighbor’s recommendation, and having tried their’s out without going to a showroom.
We have slept on water beds since the mid 70s. Since about 1995, we have slept on a soft-sided water bed. We both felt that an air bed would be as close to a water bed without being a waterbed.
This was an additional bed that we needed for our bedroom in a 2nd home….and since it was an upstairs bedroom, we didn’t want to hassle with hose and water, etc., plus the waterbed weight factor.
It took 3 of us approximately 3 hours to assemble it. We discovered that the metal bedframe had one broken wheel. The thick plastic beams went together pretty easily once we got the hang of it. The bottom foundation cover did not fit. However, a bed skirt already purchased, solved that problem. The mattress zippered pillowtop was very nice and seems of high quality.
Once the air chambers had been filled to “20″ as instruction indicated, I made the bed and was thrilled to discover how easy it is compared with making up a soft sided water bed.
Next we set about finding our personal “sleep numbers.” We both settled in around 35 and the 10 days we slept on it were heavenly!
As far as the price was concerned, actually, because it was reconditioned, we paid about $800 less for it than we paid for our last (and current) soft sided water bed. (And this air bed doesn’t need to have anything added from time to time, like the water bed conditioner that is a real problem to locate these days. Plus, if one were to spring a leak, air won’t damage flooring.
We are currently seeking to replace our soft sided water bed’s guts with the Select Comfort air mattress. What a wonderful night’s sleep!
