When doing my research on the internet I noticed that most air bed manufacturers do not suggest using box springs as a foundation as they do not provide the correct support needed for an air bed. Since I finally decided on buying a Select Comfort 5000 Series King Size Mattress and I didn’t have any kind of foundation for it (including box springs), I decided to buy theirs.
When we received the bed, the first thing we did was assemble the foundation. The foundation pieces look like hardened plastic that is colored black. Basically you assemble four plastic “beams” together which make a square and then top it off with a matching black flat piece of plastic. You do this four times and when putting these four squares together you have made your foundation. The last step is putting the coverlet on which covers the foundation and basically makes it look like a box spring (or a foundation with a white sheet around it).
I at first thought I got ripped off, but then after assembling my bed I did some more researching (I like to know everything about any product I own, especially expensive ones). The black plastic make sound cheap, but in this day of technology the plastic is indeed very hard and I believe will stand up to many years of use.
When looking over how previous and even some of today’s air bed manufacturers foundations are assembled, I was quite gracious for the $400 black plastic foundation I bought. Some air bed manufacturers require you to assemble a foundation out of wood, wood screws, and metal, which makes for a long install (2 hours). Our foundation only took 15 minutes to install, and if we had to do it over again could have only taken 5 minutes. This in itself is worth the money I paid for, but yet I also believe the foundation will last longer than its wooden counterpart, and I know we will be moving within the next year or so, and am glad I have a bed that can be easily assembled and desembled.
I guess this foundation proves that looks can be deceiving, and that a good night’s sleep is worth a good amount of money.
