I have been trying to sleep since 5:00AM this morning after waking up to use the bathroom. No use, after tossing and turning for the past hour and half, I decided to get up. Wow, it has been a week and its always the same thing. Once I wake up, there’s no going back to sleep.
After trying the Tempurpedic Eurobed for a month, I was not completely satisfied that a $3700 bed did not feel like heaven. Secondly, the bed did not ease my wife’s lower back pain she have(Tempurpedic did not cause the back pain, her spine was a little dislocated and pinching her nerves and we are unsure of how she injured it). So off to see the Wizard, the Wizard of Heavenly Sleep…or may be its just a mattress store, either way, I knew it would be expensive again….Should of learn my lesson the first time around….Ladies and Gentlemen, Price does not equal Heavenly Sleep….I repeat…Price does not equal Heavenly Sleep.
I figure this time, I will buy an even a more expensive bed then the last one….Commercial America have always stated, you get what you paid for?…Well only up to a certain point….after awhile, it doesn’t really matter. Is there really a difference between a Toyota Camry and a Bentley? If you really think about it, the answer is no…it does the same thing…takes you from point A to Point B. Both are equally reliable, difference is the price. I have never been in a Bentley before but I’m sure the comfort is not worth the value of a few houses(depending on where you live). I have come to a conclusion, a bed is no different.
After spending a few hours testing the Sleep Number 9000(the highest model) I didn’t really feel it was worth the price tag of $4400(before tax) at my local store. But my wife stated that it didn’t hurt her back after lying there for 30 or so minutes. She stated that her back hurt after a few minutes on the Tempurpedic due to her back problem and so she mostly slept on her side. For me, I felt uneasy/a tiny tension on my back after 30 min. on my back. But wanting to make my wife happy, I decided to go ahead and get the bed. They told us we could buy a new one at $4,400 or get the display model at $3,100…looking back, I should of bargain more or price shop a little but I was tired of shopping for a bed and wasn’t in the mood to keep trying new beds every month and so I got the display model and save about $1,300 but I would not be able to return it…I decided that’s fine, if I didn’t like it, I still have the Tempurpedic and I would just give this bed to my parents.
For the first week of sleeping, it’s been the same thing. I don’t have a problem sleeping at first but once I wake up, I can no longer go back to sleep. How could this be…7 days in a roll. I never had that problem with the Tempurpedic. Secondly, I would wake up tired most of the time. I feel that I’m not getting enough sleep from this bed. Tonight, I’m going back to the other bed and to see if my sleeping is off is due to the Sleep Number. As for my wife, she likes the bed. Her back no longer hurts from sleeping on it…I’m not sure if its the bed or the weekly treatment from her chiropractor. May be both. Either way, she seems happy.
Pros:
1.) The mattress is nothing but parts…if something is damage, send it off and the damage part will be replace without tossing the whole mattress out the door. This mattress is very similar to your travel luggage bag having two zipper and two compartments, one at the bottom and one at the top. The bottom stores the air bags and the top stores the foams. None of the items in this mattress is permanently attach. Everything is hold together by zipping the zippers on the top and bottom covers.
2.) You can control how firm or soft you want your bed to be. Just press a simple remote up or down. The air will pump or release from the air bags quickly. Pumping it is a little noisy but its not like you are asleep already so it doesn’t really matter.
3.) Very easy to assemble the mattress. Remember, this mattress is nothing but parts that needs to be puzzle together. It’s very easy with two people. Some store will charge $100 to assemble the bed, if so…do not do it..I don’t care how stupid you are…you can do it…trust me. Plus, you don’t need to buy the box spring for this mattress, saving you a few hundred dollars if you still want to use your old one or planning to buy a platform instead (Most traditional bed, if you purchase without the boxspring, it voids your warranties).
Cons:
*******20 years limited warranties. First 2 years they handle S/H and after that you are responsible. Regular wear and tear are not included…such as the Foams (without the foam topper, it is no longer a bed). Foams lasts around 2 years and cost over $600 to replace it. Secondly, everything will be prorated after awhile and so it will cost you money to maintain it…prices are unknown and they can charge what ever they want because you don’t have a choice.**************************
1.) I agree with epinion member, Eflkaz, the store manager’s review on Sleep Number. The parts that make up this mattress is simply too cheap looking and in my opinion and his, it does not cost much to make this mattress. You might as well go buy an affordable air mattress and slap on a foam cover and there you have it…A Home made Sleep Number. During set up, the first thing that came out of my mouth was “bleeping cheap foam” because as soon as I pick up one of the foam, it ripped about 2 inches. In my opinion, the foam will be the first to fall apart in a year or two. Secondly, all the parts are attachable making it less stable, there is really nothing to hold the inner parts in places. Making my mattress uneven on some area, especially the sides. It seems a little lopsided at the edge of the bed. The sides feels a little higher to the rest of the bed.
2.) The top and bottom covers are hold together by zippers. From my experiences with zippers on backpacks and pants is that after awhile they wear out and the zippers will no longer zip or hold/stay together. The covers are attachable but do not machine wash or dry clean them. It is recommended for spot cleaning only.
3.) In my opinion, it feels like an air mattress because it is an air mattress. Air mattress feels a little different from traditional spring bed as like the Temperpedic…it takes a little time getting use to it. The feel of the bed simply is not worth $4,400. The smell is stronger and lasted longer than Tempurpedic’s.
4.) You really do not have a need for a Sleep Number if you and your spouse like the same comfort or very firm bed. Here is why: My wife and I both have our bed at number 100…what’s the point of having a bed twice as expensive if both are maxing out at 100. This bed was design for two people with completely different taste on comfort. Couples with the same taste on comfort, don’t waste your money.
5.) Temperature of your room, bed and body will cause your sleep number to fluctuate by 5-30 levels of comfort. That was something my sales agent deny it ever occurs. Meaning if you set it at 70, the next day you can be at 100 or at 40 depending on the temperature.
6.) One of the most annoying thing is that damn bulky air pump. The air ways on the air bags are at the head of the bed. It rests at the head of the bed because the air pipes that are use to connect to the air bags are not that long. Secondly, I hope your mattress furniture is high enough to have that pump hid under your bed. If not you are in trouble. Thirdly, I hope your headboard won’t get in the way as well. So you need to check your bed rails for height and head board for space before purchase to see if it can fit the air pump. Last note on the pump, I have my pump plug on 24/7…I don’t know about you but it gives me the creeps knowing that if that pump ever malfunction and causes a fire in the middle of the night… I’m hoping that this bed will not be one big camp fire before I can get up…I once saw a report on 20/20 tv show were beds were light up and the flames rose up faster than you can say “crap”. It was like those beds were made out of gasoline or something. I hope this bed is better than the ones on that report.
7.) The bed does transfer motion. I can easily feel my wife’s movement when she toss and turn.
In my opinion, the Sleep Number is not worth the price of $4,400. Have the Sales Rep. open the mattress so you can see the Foams and Air bags and you might be disappointed you are actually paying an arm and a leg for it. This bed is even more over-hyped and over-priced than the Tempurpedic. The value is simply not there base on the materials/parts that make up this bed. Despite Tempurpedic’s over pricing, I feel their technology used to build their materials warrants the price more than the Sleep Number.
If you really like the Sleep Number and you feel you really need to get one but do not feel like paying $4,400…Try looking at the Simmons air mattress…I accidentally ran into a store that carry them. Their highest Simmons King Size air mattress was going for $2,800. It is very similar built and seems just as comfortable (the Simmons have less foam than the Sleep Number). They are less well known so you will need to do your research and find a store that carry them.
My Final Judgment is that Both the Tempurpedic and Sleep Number are not worth the price they both are set at. Unfortunately, I can’t return the Sleep Number back so I am stuck with it and it helps with my wife’s back so we will keep the bed for her sake and return the Tempurpedic.
If I was to do it all over again…I would just stick with the traditional spring bed….think about it, if it was truly that great why isn’t the spring mattress obsolete? Like an old saying,”if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
NEW UPDATE AS OF 2/13/06
Things were improving from the time I bought the bed until early January 2006 but since then it has been going down hill. At first I thought it was just a coincidence that my sleep number was changing. I used to have it at 100 and every now and then it would drop to 80 or 70. I thought, wow, that was strange but no big deal since it wasn’t doing it every day or every night that was sleeping. It was only doing it about once or twice a month, so all I needed to do is get on the bed and adjust the numbers again to my comfort level.
Now here comes the bad news, I have finally settled down on my number…..and that number is 85. Wow, finally, I have a number I’m used too…not to soft…not too firm. This is the beginning of a new nightmare for me. My special number㑉…well, it won’t stay on 85. Due to the temperature of my room, body, and bed…my number keeps on fluctuating at night. Two days ago I woke up at 70, today I woke up to at 100. I woke up with a sore back because my body is not getting use to the fluctuating comfort level of softer, firmer, softer, firmer, etc…night in and night out…you get picture. Why is it fluctuating now? May be the season is changing and temperature of room is not stable…I don’t know. When I was at 100, there was only one way but down so it didn’t fluctuate as much but now having a number below 100, it have more opportunities to fluctuate up or down. This really is upsetting since the retail store or Select failed to inform its customers before purchase. Of course, why would they…would you spend $4,400 on a bed that changes comfort every other night based on temperature. I called up Select’s customer service number and she told me it was common that it fluctuates 5-15 level(which is a lie because it has change as high as 30 numbers for me) and asked me why I didn’t read my manual. Unfortunately for me, reading the manual wouldn’t do any good after purchase because I couldn’t return the bed any way. They should have a disclosure on their bed at the stores stating that their bed’s comfort level could change over night up to 15-30 depending on the temperature of the room, body, or bed. There is a big difference in comfort when it changes by 30 numbers…you will definitely wake up sore as I did.
May 2006 Update:
This pathetic $4,400 bed is no longer even worth the price tag, I don’t know which is the bigger rip off….this bed or the oil company that keeps on raising gas prices every other day. Numbers continues to change every other day. Even if it doesn’t change, the bed is so uncomfortable now. My previous bed was a $400 king size bed I bought at the flea market even after 5 years of use and a 2-inch dip is literally more comfortable than this bed.
For the past month, I can no longer sleep through the night. I toss and turn through out the night. I wake up every 2 hours to adjust my body because if I don’t it becomes too painful. I would start with my sleep on my back, wake up sore 2 hours later; turn to my side, 2 hours later, wake up sore; turn on my stomach, wake up sore 2 hours later; turn back to my back, etc. It’s crazy that I have to get up and literally change position to even tolerate this bed leaves me speechless. My wife is also waking up more than ever too.
The bed continues to be lopsided and I believe the foam is beginning to deteriorate because I feel there is a dip on my bed already and it’s not even a year yet.

Comfort Level:
0/5 Stars overall due to its instability. The comfort level of 0-100 is a good idea but Select Comfort has failed to keep that number steady due to its fluctuation based on temperature. You figure that if something cost you this much, it should be more stable. How can anyone ever get used to a bed’s comfort level if it jumps up and down. Secondly, waking up every 2 hours to adjust my body due to pain from sleeping in a position too long. The bed is no longer comfortable after less than a year is unacceptable especially, one this expensive.
Material/Durability:
0/5 Stars. Air bags/pump design is flawed due to the increase and decrease of the comfort number by itself every other night is unacceptable. Bed is always lopsided. Foam is dipping in less than a year. Foam is unbearable after 2 years and will cost over $600 to replace.
Warranties:
0/5 Stars. Worthless when the most important part of the bed is not even cover: the foam surface. $600 every 2 years to replace these foams!!!? Do I expect a full replacement? No, but it should have some kind of coverage when it cost an arm and a leg for this bed. The foam is the most important factor because it is the thing that makes it a bed.

A bed that lives and die by the numbers, it fails horribly due to the fact that the bed itself can not stay at a selected comfort number the owners’ have chosen. It’s like a knife company claiming to have the sharpest knife known to man but can not stay sharp enough to cut tomatoes on a daily basis without sharpening it every day. Secondly, how does one get a good nights sleep when they have to wake up every couple of hours to adjust their body because the bed is so uncomfortable it causes pain after being in one position for a few hours.

The foam is unbearable now after 2 years and I called to find out the cost of replacement. It will cost over $600 to replace these foams. I will not pay $600 for foam toppers when I can buy it for less with better quality elsewhere. Their foams in my opinion are extremely cheap and have a cheap feel to it. So based on my personal experience, their foam toppers last roughly around 2 years. I weigh around 180 lbs and my wife is 105 lbs so I can tell you, we are not abusing the bed. If a 180 lbs can wear down a bed in 2 years, what does that say? It means, it’s not worth paying $4,400 for it. $2,200 per year to use a bed? Not worth it. My cheap bed I bought at the flea market lasted longer than that.

Good news for everyone who owns a Cheap Number Bed and is not happy with the foam topper or needs a replacement. Don’t let Select comfort hold you hostage for $600 foam replacement. Just give them the middle finger and go to www.isoform.com and order their 4 inch toppers for $265. They are highly rated by epinions.com users.
WOW!!! I am amaze at these foams. It does not feel like the cheap foams that Select Comfort use for their thousands of dollars bed. Do you know what these foams feel like? It feels like the Tempurpedic foams. And that is a compliment. I once had the Tempurpedic bed for a 30 day trial period. I have not been able to find an alternative foam that “FEELS” like Tempurpedic until I got these Isoform foams. It feels like the Temperpedic’s Original foam bed.
The difference between cheap foam and good foam is easy: It is in the feel. On a good foam, when you lay on it, it easily conforms to your body and yet supports it. When you get up, the foam slowly rises up to normal shape.
The great thing about this foam is that it does not transfer motion like the Tempurpedic’s. I can not say enough about these foams. It conforms to my body and I have been able to sleep well again since I replaced it with these Isoform. It supports enough that I do not sink to the bottom of the bed. I can again sleep on the side and on my back. I have not tried to sleep on my stomach yet so I can not comment on that.
As far as smell goes, I don’t know, it was zipped up into my Sleep Number. But when I was unwrapping it, I did smell a very light smell when I put my face right next to it.
Ratings For ISOFORM Topper:
Feels: 5/5. Not too soft, not too firm. Just perfect. If you love Tempurpedic feels, you will love this for a fraction of the price.
Price: 5/5. I can not say enough about a product that gives me great sleep at $265 (4 inches). Tempurpedic’s topper is $948 and is only 3 inches.
Shipping/Handling: 5/5. I had no problem and delivery was quick enough. I was sent an email from the company as soon as they process my order.
Smell: 4/5. Barely have any smell.
Value/Quality: 5/5 You can’t get a foam with this quality for this price. Hands down, equal to Tempurpedic’s. If I was blind folded, I would not know the difference.
Durability: Unkown, I have it for less than a month. I do not know how long it will last but if it lasts for just 2 years, its worth it. Its like buying a new bed every 2 years for $265. You just can’t beat that.
