My wife and I finally took a shot at the Select Comfort beds. We couldn’t justify the $1000 price jump from the 5000 to the 7000 model, so we went with the 5000. The first night we slept on it, we were not happy. After sleeping on a pillow top mattress for 5 years, we couldn’t get used to the lack of cushion on the 5000 model. So we improvised. For $150 my wife bought a 3 inch thick, king size memory foam topper from Sams… the big wholesale/warehouse store. I actually removed the pathetic little mattress topper from the “pillow top” zippered compartment on top of the 5000 and replaced it with the 3″ memory foam. Then we put their foam topper, that we had removed, on top of the bed and covered it with a $50 down mattress cover. The result is as good or better than the 7000 model. We still have the great support of the air filled compartments, but the the added comfort of memory foam, soft foam and down comforters. Granted, we added some more cost to the already high $1800 we spent on the mattress, but we’re still well below the $2900 for the 7000 model. I’m sure Select Comfort sales people would discourage you from replacing their toppers, but only in an effort to upgrade you to the 7000 or 9000 models. Get the 5000 and soften it up your self!
