Good Buy Crown Jewel… check in the Sterns & Foster area for updates… Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Mattress I have had worse back pain since buying. The salesperson said it may take a couple months to get used...
One day several years ago, my wife succumbed to our daughter’s pleas for a queen-sized bed. The deal: our nearly new and rather firm Simmons Beautyrest would be moved up to her room and in it’s place, we would purchase a Sealy Posturpedic Crown Jewel Mattress she had her eye on. Since I was perfectly happy with the Simmons mattress, I suggested a true democratic solution, a vote. After we both voted the final tally came in, I lost one to nothing, the explanation of my loss was something about a hanging chad. The Simmons was dragged up the stairs my moi and the new Sealy Posturpedic Crown Jewel Mattress was delivered.
Mattress construction has come a long way over the years with a wide array of design ideas to try to extend mattress life, some helpful, some are not. Sealy has integrated several design features in the Crown Jewel line, some of which are explained below:
PostureTech Coils - senses weight and apportions support to the proper areas of your body.
Dual Support System is an patented and improved coil that makes “micro” adjustments for specific body contour.
EverEdge - A firm foam insert made of polyethylene to support the outer edges of the mattress from compressing from body weight. This gives the consumer the ability to sleep nearer to the mattress’ edge offering up to 10% more sleeping surface as compared with traditional mattresses
StayTrue Fiberlux and SealyFoam - The Fiberlux is a pre-compressed fiber which helps resist the problem of body impressions left on their mattresses. SealyFoam is a higher density polyurethane foam which is 10% more durable and conforms to your body comfortably. They also claim that is not necessary to rotate your mattress as most manufacturers do.
Micro-Tek Foundation - Constructed of polymer materials similar to graphite, Sealy claims this is more than 10x more durable than most of the industry’s best.
I have become concerned with the fact that we have begun seeing impressions on the mattress top. We have rotated the mattress a number of times and impressions are showing on both sides. The mattress came with a 10 year warranty but be fore-warned these warranties are written by a team of lawyers and you will seldom if ever be able to cash in with the manufacturer. The following come directly from the manufacturer’s web page and if you read carefully, there is plenty of wiggle room for Sealy:
Your warranty covers the following items during normal wear:
Mattress:
Torn handles, stitches pulled out of the handle where sewn to the mattress, or tears in the mattress fabric where the handles are attached
Coils or wires that are loose or broken
Coils or wires that protrude or rip through the fabric
Body indentations of 1-1/2″ or greater
Excessively lumpy feel
Sagging: Your mattress must be continuously supported by a matching foundation, or equivalent, with an appropriate frame. The frame should include a center support with at least 5 legs or 5 hardwood cross-slats for queen and king sets.
Foundation:
Splits in the wood frame
Squeaks, rattles or noises
Bent, loose or defective beams and/or center support rail
Loose or broken foundation wire
Compression of modules
Unstapling of modules
Sagging: A proper bed frame must continuously support the foundation. For king and queen sets, a center support having at least 5 legs or 5 hardwood cross-slats is necessary.
Items not covered:
Items and damages not specifically listed in the “Warranty Covers” section are not covered, including, for example:
Mattress fabric (including stains, soiling or burns)
Foundation border wires (which run along the perimeter of the foundation), bent due to moving or bending the foundation
Structural damage from using an improper bed frame. This warranty applies to queen and king size mattress or foundation ONLY if they are used on an appropriate frame with a rigid center support having at least 5 legs or 5 hardwood cross-slats.
Clearance bedding sold “as is,” and floor models
Bed height
Comfort preference
Body indentations less than 1-1/2″
Sealy mattress damage due to inappropriate foundation. This top-of-the-line mattress is designed for full performance only when matched with the appropriate Sealy foundation as part of a total sleep set.
Sheet fit
Replacement of another piece in the sleep set, unless the other piece is also defective
Mattress or foundation damage due to abuse
Transportation costs
In addition to the fact this still offers us a comfortable night’s sleep, I am also impressed with the fact movement of my wife on one side of the bed is not transferred to me. Any movement by your partner will go nearly undetected, a tribute to Sealy’s Dual Support System designed into the Sealy Posturpedic Crown Jewel Mattress.
The EverEdge feature is a definite plus. I can personally attest to it’s usefulness. I have been forced to the outer reaches of my mattress on many occasions by “someone” using more than their fair share of the bed. I find it easy to rest comfortably near the edge without feeling like it has compressed and about to send me overboard.
I suppose the StayTrue Fiberlux and SealyFoam may be, in my estimation, the portion of the bed that may not be living up to every one of it’s claims. It is my guess… and only my guess… that the impressions I am seeing may be caused by this portion of the mattress compressing. For the most part, it appears to be more of an aesthetic problem and has not detracted form our overall comfort.
We are able to use both regular or over-sized sheet sets on this mattress but the regulars are rather snug. I would suggest the purchase of over-sized sheets for both ease of making the bed and overall comfort.
The Sealy Posturpedic Crown Jewel Mattress falls within the Luxury line of the Sealy Posturpedic family. Consumers will find this line has a wide variance in price ranging from $999 to $2500. The mattress I am reviewing here falls in the midrange of the Crown Jewel Posturpedic line since it was bought on sale with an MSRP closer to $1399 and has given us nearly three years of comfortable sleep. Despite the indentations I am noticing, as I feel most pillow-top mattresses will eventually leave some impressions, I am still recommending this mattress. To date, we have yet to feel this is causing any discomfort but I will be updating over time on this situation as well as customer support should the need arise.
A quick update as of August 4, 2004:
As previously mentioned, despite my preference for a firmer mattress choice, this mattress is still performing much as it had in October of 2002 when I first wrote this Epinion. The indentations I alluded to throughout the text of the review are still noticeable - even after fixing the bed. However, I must still say the indentations have not progressed any further and I still cannot suggest any added discomfort due to sleeping on this mattress.
Please take the time to check out the comments section of this and each review here at Epinions as you will generally be left with an array of opinions and experiences of additional writers from this site.
