Previously, I had written a review of the Sealy 9″ True Form mattress. To give you a background, my husband and I were tired of our 8 year old caved-in mattress. We were tired of waking up with back pain and we were tired of rolling in to one another during the night due to our mattress being concave. In search of a new mattress, we came across a great deal on the Sealy True Form mattresses. We decided to lay on them and do some comparison shopping.

Initially, we found the Sealy 11″ True Form and the Tempur-Pedic classic to be the most comfortable. Both offered the degree of firmness we enjoy but with just the right amount of cushy comfort. We decided to stick with the sealy True Form because it was much less expensive and had much better reviews on Epinions. We tried out the 9″ True Form which was $400 cheaper than the 11″ True Form and decided that we could do without the cushy feeling to save that extra $400. We ended up purchasing the Sealy 9″ True Form. We made a big mistake!

The first few nights on the Sealy 9″ were horrible. Our backs were not sore in the morning as they were with our old mattress, but the Sealy 9″ was so firm we could not get comfortable at all. We tried flipping it over to make sure it was not installed upside down. It wasn’t. We waited for about a week hoping the memory foam would soften up. It did soften up a bit, but after a week of barely any sleep my husband and I called our sales rep and requested it be exchanged for the Sealy 11″. Meanwhile, we put our old mattress on the bed and sacrificed back pain for sleep.

A week or so later our 11″ True Form arrived. At first we were worried. My husband called me from work to say he couldn’t tell much of a difference between the new 11″ and the 9″ we exchanged it for. Our room was cold, however and the mattress had not been broken in. Even so, we ended up sleeping quite comfortably the whole night. We could definitely feel a difference when we slept on it the first night. A week later, we were both extremely happy with the mattress. We were sleeping well, had no pain, and were generally quite comfortable. Our backs are supported nicely, we do not roll into one another, we do not feel each other tossing during the night, and the mattress is very cozy. The only discomfort I feel now is due to not having a proper pillow to support my head. I wish we had put forth the extra cost for the pillows, but now we will have to wait till Christmas. In any case, I can’t stress enough what a difference a few added inches of convoluted memory foam makes in the comfort of these mattresses. Personally, the $400 dollars extra was well worth the price for comfort.

A FEW OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE SEALY TRUE FORM MATTRESSES:

1) Many people have complained about the smell when these mattresses first arrive. Although I did notice a distinct odor, it was not offensive, was generally mild and did become unnoticeable within a few days.

2) I have not heard anyone talk about a break-in period with these mattresses, but I strongly believe there is one. Both my husband and I observed that both the 9″ and the 11″ True Form mattresses softened up noticeably after about a week. They did not loose their support at all, but we did find they were more comfortable after a week or so.

3) These mattresses are not conducive to plopping. You have to lay down gently on them. If you plop down on to the bed you’ll feel like you hit a brick wall!

4) I have not once felt like I was sleeping in a hole. After the mattress molds itself to your form, it does feel like sleeping on a cloud. Also, I do not notice being hot at night (although we keep our room very cold usually.)

5) Memory foam can be addictive. At least I find myself becoming addicted to my mattress the more I sleep on it. It was a bit hard to get used to the first few nights, but now I’m definitely hooked!!!

6) With my whole body in proper alignment at night, we find we are in need of new pillows. Take this into consideration if you decide to purchase one of these mattresses.

UPDATE (12/10/07):

We have had our mattress for 2 months now. I am SO happy with it! I really don’t think I could sleep in any other bed. It was definitely a great purchase. We bought two contour memory foam pillows to go with the mattress (for some reason we weren’t comfortable with our old pillows on this mattress). With the contour pillows, I am in heaven when I sleep. The only thing I regret is that I sleep so deeply that I don’t even remember my dreams (if I had them!) My husband says he wakes up every morning in the same position he went to sleep in. We would both still highly recommend this mattress to anyone.
