It’s been said that you “get what you pay for”; meaning quality usually costs more. In this case, you don’t really “get what you pay for”.
I made my purchase a couple of years ago. I began having second thoughts since the expense was rather high, and I really don’t like buying things like this ’sight unseen’.
Anyway, Comfort Direct had some sort of unexplained delay prior to shipping the mattress. That, in itself, didn’t really disturb me. However, I was already experiencing an unexplainable feeling of doubt; there was just something not ‘quite right’ about the voice on the other end of the phone. The things he’d say, or how he’d respond to whatever I might have said… I can’t quite place it, but I was feeling unsettled enough to decide to cancel my order (early, and due to the delay it was prior to shipping).
That, and the seemingly particularly high price I had agreed to.
Anyway, I tried to cancel my order (and due to the delay, it was still prior to shipping). Alas, I’m just not very assertive and succumbed to the pressure to ‘just try it’ with copious assurances and guarantees. There were also plenty of rational sounding reasons to think that no matter what, the mattress could (and would be, at no charge) be made to suit me as there are a considerable variety of top covers and configurations and so on…
Well, I arrived home one day to find three large boxes sitting outside my apartment. That certainly didn’t seem to be very secure. Installation wasn’t much of a problem, the hardest part was getting the segments out of the heavy plastic bags they were encased in. The two segments actually are rather awkward to move around, and I guess I did find it to be rather a chore to get them squeezed into the outer encasing mattress pad/cover.
All was not quite well though. This mattress didn’t resemble what I had had in my mind from looking at the website. I blamed myself for this; even though my conversations with Comfort Direct had actually supported my erroneous mental model. I truly expected considerably more viscoelastic foam, between myself and the internals of the mattress (air bags). Indeed, the only part of the mattress whose foam that I would identify as “memory foam” or viscoelastic foam, is the tiny layer of foam in the outer cover/mattress pad.
I also must admit that my initial impressions weren’t particularly good either. I was surprised at the… well, lack of robustness and suspect quality of the mattress components. I remember trying to convince myself that that is how all “air” mattresses would be. Okay, now that I have it together, the next step is to try sleeping on it.
Herein, I became extremely upset, concerned and worried. I “sank” unevenly and far too deeply into the bed. To say it was awfully uncomfortable would be an under-statement. I even found it very difficult just to manage to climb off of it sagged so badly beneath me. So, I know it’s supposed to be adjustable (Thank Heavens for small favors). I adjusted it considerably towards firmer. No improvement. Okay, so I adjusted it further. Again, no improvement (gulp). So I adjusted it all the way to maximum firmness. Finally, there was at least some improvement.
I was worried there. I wondered how “they” were going to react to me asking to return their mattress. I seemed to already have assumed, although I’d never read or been told, that I’d be responsible at least for the return shipping (and after seeing the three giant boxes, I figured shipping wouldn’t be cheap). Maybe I wouldn’t have to return it… It was better… Somewhat… Some…
In giving it the “benefit of the doubt”, I figured that since it was a considerable change, it was even a change to a whole new kind of mattress, so maybe it was just me. Maybe I just needed to “get used to it”.
Well, over time I did somewhat grow accustomed to it, although it took me a couple of months to do so. In the end, I decided (by means of not making a decision) to keep it. I was just too big a wimp to try to return it (they count on people being that way). See, I figured I’d “made my bed”, so I should “lie in it”. In other words, it was my stupidity that I bought the darn thing, so I’m just stuck with it. Who knows, they might have honored their satisfaction guarantee (although it seems they may not do that either some or all of the time)(for surely, I’m not the only one who’d want to return it…)(surely).
Well, it’s been a several years now. It doesn’t look like there were any epinion reviews of the product back then. I’m not sure I knew about epinions then anyway. In any case, I don’t hate the mattress, I just don’t like it very much. To it’s credit, it is a little better than the mattress I had before it (well, it wasn’t much of a mattress - a promotional quality mattress), and it is better than sleeping on the floor.
The fact that it’s supposed to be ‘adjustable’, and is except that the mattress is abominable on any other setting than maximum firmness, really kind of angers me (I hate marketing that is ‘literally’ true; but utterly false in practice - that’s just a clever way to lie). Between all that, and the fact that I (unfortunately -well, the really unfortunate thing is that I ordered the thing in the first place) never actually tried to ‘return’ the mattress (and so avoided the possibility of poor treatment) and so cannot comment on that. What can I say. Better Luck Next Time or Sweet Dreams.
Pros
Considerably better than sleeping on a sharp rock (maybe it’s not all ‘that’ bad).
Might make a passable Guest Bed.
The Springs don’t make any noise (it hasn’t got any springs).
Cons
The “Adjustment” function of the mattress is utterly worthless/useless (maximum firmness is the only acceptable/usable setting).
Sales tactics were a little aggressive and honestly, they do not have your welfare/satisfaction in mind (else they wouldn’t sell you this product, at least, not at anywhere near this price)(buyer beware).
The Price to Value Ratio is very High (poor). It’s a Poor Value for the Money.
Mattress didn’t live up to either my expectations or my hopes (it certainly wasn’t what I expected, and not in a good way).
Material and Design leave much to be desired. Quality is Suspect.
