I highly recommend the SAM (Self Adjusting Mattress). It has given me the most restful sleep I have ever had. In my opinion it’s the best mattress made. I first ordered the mattress and then I called to cancel it the next day after I read some of the negative reviews on this web site. I was able to cancel without any problem. I gave no reason for the cancellation.
After reading the negative reviews more carefully a second time I decided that most of them demonstrated a lack of credibility. Most of negativity was based on arrogance ,deceit, misunderstanding, and gross distortions. Some mishandling and misuse are also suspected. Competitive jealousy may be an issue.
Some of the negative reviewers seem to be professional scam artists. One couple was into trying every mattress on the market for it’s free trial period. They returned the SAM. When they tried to return the free therapeutic pillows that came with the order, they were first charged for them. They then got angry and wrote a negative review, even though they later received a full refund. The pillows are manufactured by a second company in Canada. Pillows are not a returnable item. Another negative reviewer bragged about how he had received the mattress and managed to not pay for it. The mattress was mistakenly shipped without his credit card being charged, according to him. When the mattress was in route he was called by the company and told of the error. He then said he had a change of mind and didn’t want it. The company then asked him to refuse delivery. He then told them that he was so angry about the mistake he was going to keep it without paying for it. One negative reviewer said she had trouble returning the box spring. The SAM has no box spring. One negative reviewer admits that he is an employee of a competitive company.
Some of the negative reviewers I believe had genuine problems, but I suspect mishandling and misuse to be the problem. The mattress, at one time, seems to have been shipped in two sections. This created a greater opportunity for damage in transit. A older couple that seemed to be physically challenged wrote about the difficulty they had in handling the mattress. Since, at one time, it appeared to required assembly, mistakes in putting it together could have happened. The mattress is now shipped in one piece, fully assembled.
The SAM was designed as a therapeutic mattress. I had a Butt Seam Water Bed in the 70’s and one day the kids used it as a trampoline. They were laughing and having so much fun that I didn’t want to stop them. The next day the seam split, but luckily it sat in a plastic liner that prevented spillage. The SAM utilizes a valve technology that is more than adequate for normal usage, but you have to use common sense. Nothing is indestructible.
Comfort Direct now offers a choice of shipping options. I chose the free shipping option. They only provide assistance to your front door. Getting a queen size mattress up two flight of steps in a older home can be quite a challenge by yourself. You’ll need two strong bodies. There is a White Glove, extra cost, option that will do all of the physical handling for you.
I called Comfort Direct a second time and reordered the mattress. I voluntarily explained to them the reasons for my initial cancellation. I asked for some explanation and clarification about some technical questions I had about the mattress. I talked to the owner of the company and SAM designer, Kevin, who went into great detail about the product. The basic conception and technical design of the mattress is without peer.
I ordered the Queen Size mattress and received two therapeutic pillows plus free shipping for $1500.00. It’s lot of money, but well worth it when you realize that you will spend the next one third of your life laying in bed. The mattress arrived in one box with no assembly necessary. The pillows came separately.
I was immediately impressed with the quality of construction and materials. The mattress is fully adjustable for firmness. The virgin wool topper feels great.
I have Arthritis and have had two corrective surgeries. I have always awoke with back or shoulder pain. I was told to expect a break-in period. The very first night I received deep restful sleep and it gets better every night. It hasn’t cured my Arthritis, but it has greatly diminished the effects. I now awake without backache and shoulder pain. I wake-up refreshed and more able to deal with the stress of everyday life.
I work shift work and getting deep REM sleep has always been a problem for me. On my first work weekend off, after receiving the mattress, I slept for two days straight. The SAM gave me the deepest REM sleep that I have ever had.
The people at Comfort Direct were respectful and well informed. The delivery was first rate. They called me a day ahead of delivery and gave me a second call in route.
The mattress is unique in that it uses atmospheric pressure to inflate the mattress. There are no noisy air pumps to wear out. The Queen size mattress has 18 individual air cells ( 9 per side) that allow the mattress to conform to your body shape. The air cells utilize Boyle’s law, a basic physics principal that allows the SAM to optimally adjust to each individuals body regardless or size of shape. Each independent cell has it’s own inlet and outlet valves. The outlet valves are connected to a common header that terminates into a firmness control. There are two firmness controls on my queen size bed, one for each of the dual, separate banks of 9 individual air cells. The cells are also filled with a foam that stores the atmospheric energy. The foam acts to dampen and increase the speed of the atmospheric energy exchange. When you rise, from the mattress, a vacuum is created inside the cylinders. This vacuum is due to atmospheric pressure which forces air back into the patented air valves causing each independent air cell to slowly return to it’s original form. The air slowly seeps out when you lay on it until the selected firmness you have dialed in, via the firmness control, is reached.
The quality of construction is superb. The air cells are made of industrial grade polyurethane. The cells are radio frequency (RF) welded. The(RF) welding along with the industrial strength material create a cell that is 10 times stronger than one made of rubber or vinyl. The cells are surrounded by a high quality supportive foam. A 3 inch foam of your choice goes on top of the cells. I chose the Resilitex foam. Resilitex is a state-of-the-art material. Resilitex is fire retardant, hypoallergenic, and odor free. A New Zealand, washable, virgin wool topper is conveniently zipped on top of the foam layer. New Zealand wool is a fantastic material and cannot be duplicated by man or nature. No other wool has quite the same properties. It can absorb 1/3 of it’s weight in moisture and not feel damp to your skin. It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. It’s extremely comfortable.
The mattress foundation is important. You can place it on your existing box spring support,if it’s in like new condition. However, you need to understand that any sag in the foundation will be transfered to the mattress. I think that a lot of the people who expressed dissatisfaction with the SAM, failed to realize this. All air,and foam mattress work best with a solid platform support. The typical bed frame supports only on the edges. Wood is the best material for a platform. You can purchase one from Comfort Direct, or another vendor.
The SAM mattress, as far as I know, is only available on the Internet.
Kevin explained to me that his company is entirely vertical. They manufacture all components. The mattress is about 12 inches high. I had to purchase deep pocket fitted sheets to replace my old out-of-date ones. Most pillow top, foam, and air mattress’s require this. You don’t need a mattress pad for sleeping, but I do recommend a 100% cotton one for intimacy. You will temporarily loose the plush comfort of the wool topper, but cotton is easier to clean than wool.
