After 10+ years on my old budget mattress, I was awakening each morning with a stiff neck, shooting pain through my lower back, and a feeling like I had spent the night fighting a war. Now I sleep soundly on my S&F Hampshire Plush, and awake refreshed and in a much better mood all day long. This mattress is everything I had hoped for and expected. It was expensive ($1300 JC Penney for Queen size) but not a bad price for the comfort!
Here are three quick items to think about if you are considering this mattress: 1) weight, 2) size, and 3) sheets. It is heavy, although two average adults should be able to move or flip it. The mattress is very thick (about 15″) and the entire sleep set may be too high for some. Mine measures nearly 31″ from the floor to top of the mattress. However, a reduced foundation is available. The thickness and weight make it somewhat difficult to tuck in sheets, so you may want to try lifting the bottom and corners in the store. Lastly, not only get deep pocket sheets, but look for those that will fit up to a 20″ thick mattress. The deep pocket sheets I bought (for a 14″ thick mattress) barely make it.
If you are just beginning the mattress buying experience, I’d suggest first going to a mattress/furniture store to lie and flop around on some mattresses. This will give you an idea of how urgently you need a new mattress, and will give you an idea of what to expect on a serious shopping expedition. If you’re extra eager you can try to decide whether you like the firm, quilted (plush), or pillow top feel, regardless of the mattress brand. A mattress pad will add extra cushion to whatever mattress top you prefer, so keep this in mind.
Next I’d suggest spending ample amounts of time on epinions, which you are probably already doing. For me this site made the difference between just covering my eyes and pointing to a mattress and making an informed decision. Another good site to visit is www.whatsthebest-mattress.com. My initial reason for looking at S&F were the very positive reviews on epinions. Every other type of mattress I had been considering had at least a few individuals who were unhappy with their choices. Sealy Posturepedic was a close second choice. I had also considered Simmons, but have heard that their quality is inconsistent. My mother’s experience with her Simmons mattress was also testimony to this opinion.
Comparison shopping on mattresses is next to impossible because the same mattress carries a different name in each store. One epinions writer has noticed that the quilting pattern is the same on identical mattresses, which gives some help in making comparisons. Others have noted that Stearns&Foster makes it easier by retaining the first character of the name within each mattress type (firm, plush, pillowtop) from store to store.
Sure enough, the queen Edenhall firm in Sears ($1349) was the Exeter firm ($1314) in JC Penney, the Durrington pillowtop ($1079) in Sears was the Dorrington ($1081) in JC Penney, and the Hartley Plush in Mattress Discounters ($1699) was the Hampshire in JC Penney ($1300 close out). These are only examples and other stores will have different names. I strongly suggest that you check out the Stearns& Foster website (www.streansandfoster.com) where they list each of their mattresses in the firm, plush, or pillowtop category with the suggested price. This way you can determine the level of luxury of each mattress and get a baseline on the price. I made a list with 3 columns (firm, plush, and pillowtop) and listed each mattress from most to least expensive, noting features I thought might be important. It really helped me to sort all this out.
The final purchase was made at JC Penney because the mattress had a close out price, as well as a sales lady who was very helpful but never pushy. She gave me an additional 10% off of the frame price because I for asked for her on my second visit (only $5 but the gesture was nice). A week later the bed was being offered with a free frame or delivery, and she went to extra effort to get $60 refunded on my purchase.
I also had a pleasant time mattress shopping in Sears. At The Mattress Factory the salesman was professional and very, very knowledgeable, but I a little too intent on selling a mattress to me that very minute. I also checked out Rooms to Go which didn’t have any S&F mattresses at the time, and National Mattress & Furniture Warehouse when shopping for other brands. The time from the initial research to final purchase was about 3 weeks, but I wish I had done all this a long time ago!
