We ordered our Select Comfort 5000 Queen Size mattress to replace an 8 year old Chirotonic mattress we had. I have had back problems on and off for several years. I also tend to feel hot in bed. I was hesitant about ordering this mattress for mainly one reason: price. What alleviated my concerns was that the mattress comes with a 20 year warranty, whereas most mattresses provide proper support for only 5-7 years according to the spine specialist.

We visited the store in the local mall to try out the various beds they have. We decided to go with the queen size 5000 with dual wired remotes.

Other reviews I have read claim a few things I have found untrue. First, assembly was included at no extra charge. Second, this bed is NOT a hot sleeper. Third, Sleeping on your side does NOT cause shoulder pain. Fourth, the bed does not smell once covered with a mattress pad and clean sheets. Fifth, the bed does not need to be set at 15 for 30 minutes before it can be used for the first time, it needs to be set at 100 for 1 hour before it can be used for the first time. Sixth, if you followed the instructions to obtain your sleep number properly, your number should stay within 1 setting (a difference of 5) from your original number, not vary greatly.

We are very happy with our sleep number bed, and haven’t slept better. It’s comfortable, cool, and worth the price.

UPDATE June 8, 2005

I recently reviewed our warranty information and found that the mattress is only covered by a full warranty for 2 years. YES ONLY 2 YEARS!!! Afterwards, YOU (the purchaser) are responsible for 20% Plus 4% for every year since the mattress was purchased. This means that at 3 years, your mattress is only covered 68%. Assuming an average cost of $1800 for this bed, this means we are responsible for $576 of the cost for a replacement mattress if necessary. This makes me upset. If I ever need warranty service, I will first call Select Comfort, and then, if they do not cooperate, I will have an attorney contact them, and I recommend the same for any of you.

All this aside, we still love the mattress so far.

Regarding Comments:

The Sleep Number Bed works using an extremely quiet air pump to inflate an air bladder or bladders (depending on model and preference) inside the mattress. This air pump only makes small clicks and hums if you adjust you sleep number. You must have room under the head of your bed, and an available outlet for the pump. There are either two wired controllers (one for each air bladder) which are connected to the pump, or one wireless controller for both bladders. The sleep number is from 5 (softest) to 100 (firmest) in increments of 5. My sleep number is 65, and my fiances’ is 50. I hope this clears up your questions.
