Chronic back aches (both my husband and myself); two new mattresses in as many years and then adding “egg crates”, down mattress pillow tops, foam padding — nothing helped. We were desperate.
We spoke to a few friends who’d bought the TempurPedic mattress and loved it. But to me, this product was just another “foam” style one. We knew no one that had ever even considered the Sleep Number mattress– mainly because of the price. But it seemed that since every time we turned on the t.v., there was Lindsay Wagner telling us “pick up the phone–NOW”. Was it the Lindsay Wagner intimidation, my superstition of thinking that “this is meant to be” (since it was there everytime I turned on the t.v.), or was it that the backaches were getting progressively worse? Hummmmmmmmm. That was the question.
Finally, my husband and I sat down and discussed the situation. We concluded that Sleep Number couldn’t be any worse than what we were going through already. But being me, I needed answers to questions that were not confirmed on the t.v.
One: what exactly does the warranty cover?
Everything for 20 years — unconditionally.
Two: what happens if the bed is not for me?
Return within 30 days — no questions asked.
Three: How does the bed “work”?
Basically, air chambers inflated to one’s
preference for their support and comfort.
Four: Then why would I just not go out and buy an
air bed and save about $2,000.00?
Sleep Number is not only the air chambers, but
also includes the cushioning, padding, etc. that
plays an important part of the body forming
mechanism of finding the right comfort.
Five: What makes Sleep Number so much better than the
other new beds that were coming out — such as
the TempurPedic?
This is where the salesguy went into warp speed
telling me about how bad “foam” is for the body.
Six: What exactly is the cushioning in the Sleep
Number? Is it hypoallergic?
(I forget all the materials mentioned in the
fabrication of the padding, but I do remember
the “foam” part the salesguy mentioned.) RED
FLAG, RED FLAG!
Seven: Didn’t you just tell me that foam was bad for
the body?
Well the Sleep Number bed just has a thin layer
of foam to help out with the comfort over the
air chambers.
I recall that this was my first moment of wariness. I told the guy that I’d talk the details over with my husband and get back with him. I actually had no intention of getting back with him. But when I told my husband what I’d been told, well–suffice to say that my husband is not as particular as I am and he told me to order it.
Enough of the PREview. The bed came. It was ridiculously difficult to put together. It has this huge plastic frame that you put together in the way that you put together Lincoln Logs. The frame goes into a mattress shaped fabric box. Then you stuff in air tubes, padding, etc. And top it all off with a zip on mattress topper–ours being a pillow top.
We threatened lawsuit four weeks into ownership when the bed went lopsided and customer service advised that we had to invest an additional $60.00 per tube for as many tubes as it would take to get the bed “level” again. The threat fell on listening ears and we received several additional sets of tubes at no extra charge. Come to find out, the tubes weren’t the problem. Although the frame appeared to be seated properly, it had shifted out of place on my side of the bed causing the lopsidedness.
It was only a few months after we had been using the bed that it started “popping”. It pops for no apparent reason. We climb in bed, begin to drift off to sleep and suddenly “POP!” Customer service advised us to check the plastic frame to make sure that it is properly snapped together. It looked fine to us and when we had all the tubes and padding off of it and pressed on it, it didn’t pop. Otherwise they had no clue as to how to resolve the popping problem.
We would have returned the bed before the 30 days was up but when I called customer service about doing so, I was informed that we had to not only pay for the shipping and handling to return it, but we would still be responsible for the $250.00 or so that it had cost to send it to us. “Shipping and Handling is Non-Refundable and is NOT included in the 30 day “warranty”.
We are into about two years now of ownership, two years of still trying to get comfortable with this bed, and two additional years of still waking with backaches.
I will probably use it for another year or two while I save up my money, then put it on the guest bed and go out and buy a Tempur Pedic.
