The Sleep Number bed is actually what brought me to this site most recently, and is what made me decide to join Epinions! The following experience with this bed/company will be written as factual as possible.

We have a good friend who has had his sleep number 5000 bed for over a year now. He told us that it has been one of the best investments he has ever made, and that both he and his wife (who both have back problems) just love their bed. Because of their positive experience we started thinking about trying one out. We had also been thinking about upgrading our queen bed to a king size, due to many factors…one being we wanted more space (even though our queen pillowtop was not that old and was comfy enough) and two being I am pregnant and REALLY wanted more space.

A Memorial Day Weekend (2007) special 18 month financing offer with Select Comfort is what finally took us to the Select Comfort store in our local shopping mall. My husband was pretty sure he wanted the bed… I wasn’t so sure I wanted to spend a ton of money on it but was willing to check it out.

The saleslady greeted us and started showing us the beds. We knew already we wanted the 5000, since we didn’t want the “bare bones” model but didn’t want to get a super fancy one either. She did the pressure point thing where you lay down on the lower quality bed and she shows you how the bed takes the “red pressure points” away on the computer screen. Well that didn’t work so well seeing as I am pregnant…My hips just hit the bottom of the bed. However I figured that maybe that’s just what happens. Next we tried out the bed we would be buying. It felt okay although I was having some nagging doubts about the way the air felt a little unsteady…rather like a firm waterbed. I didn’t like how rolling over (I toss and turn when I sleep) felt strange. However, our friend liked it, my husband seemed to like it, and the saleslady was so sure of the product…I figured it would turn out nice and comfy in the end. The saleslady was also very honest and forthright about the return policy costing between $150-$200 depending on whether you send it in yourself or have them pick it up.

So we did the paperwork…the entire time I was saying to my husband, “I don’t know if we should be spending all this money on a bed…but I guess if it helps…” The capable saleslady also talked us into some “on clearance” $150 sheets (they have elastic all around and special elastic bands to help them stay on the bed no matter how the bed is adjusted), a $100 waterproof mattress pad, and a couple of reading pillows. We decided to “save” $150 by assembling it ourselves.

Just to pass some time, I started reading Epinions about sleep number beds and started to get a little nervous. But I figured some people really loved their bed and surely we would be one of those.

I do have to say I was impressed that we bought the bed on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and by Sunday our online account showed that at least part of it had already been shipped via UPS! Even through a holiday weekend, we had all 6 boxes of bed at our door by that Wednesday. On Wednesday we also received a handwritten postcard from our saleslady thanking us for our purchase.

My husband worked very hard getting rid of our old guest bed, moving our queen bed downstairs to the guest room, and then setting up the new Sleep Number 5000. The foundation parts are indeed plastic of some sort but they are pretty sturdy. Still…seemed strange I guess. The mattress itself was very easy to set up. It DID kind of look cheap, just two air bladders and some foam borders and some covers…but then, who ever really looks at the inside of a regular mattress? I figured maybe those would look just as cheap. I decided it wasn’t fair to judge a bed just because we got the opportunity to look inside.

That night, we excitedly got into our new purchase, expecting great things. My husband liked his side soft so went down to a 35 or 40. I like mine more firm so tried 50, as I had in the store. My husband went to sleep… I did NOT. Pregnant notwithstanding, I couldn’t even begin to remotely get comfortable. If the bed was soft enough for my hips, it was too soft to support my shoulders. If I firmed it up for my shoulders, it was hurting my hips. I tossed and turned for hours, dozed off for maybe 30 minutes, and woke up at 4am in so much pain! I had to take my pillow downstairs and sleep in our old bed in the guest room.

The next morning, pregnancy hormones kicked in and I got extremely upset at my sleepless night. For over $2800 I had expected at least SOME rest, rather than waking up bleary eyed and in pain. I knew right then we had to send it back and cut our losses. My husband wanted to give it another chance.

That evening we talked and I insisted that we had just totally overspent, and there’s no reason to have to “get used to” a bed, or “find your sleep number” for that amount of money. I argued that we could get a very decent pillowtop mattress for half the price. (Not to mention on a regular pillowtop, you wouldn’t have to adjust the numbers to match if you wanted to spend some cuddle time together!) My husband, willing to please, decided to place the call to Select Comfort.

That night I tried the bed again. After an hour, I couldn’t take it anymore and went downstairs again. The next morning, my husband came down bleary eyed saying “I didn’t sleep well this time either–my back hurts!” This bed just wasn’t for us.

I will say the Select Comfort customer service is very good. They did not argue with us about our return, other than suggesting we try a few more nights. When we insisted we were done, they accepted that.

We received the bed at our home on May 30, and the men came to pick up the bed on June 9, which is really not too bad of a turnaround. Rather unfortunately, we now have an 18 mos same-as-cash loan on about $550 to cover all the accessories we got and the $200 pickup fee. However, after buying a regular bed, and adding up all the new linens (and the Select Comfort accessories, which are still useable) and the secondhand bedframe we got, it still ended up less than our original Sleep Number bill.

Two days after they picked up the bed I emailed Select Comfort regarding our refund. They wrote promptly back informing me that the refund had been credited the day after the pickup and would show up on our next statement.

So to be completely honest…I absolutely hated the Sleep Number bed. It was horrible! However, I could not complain about the customer service. The saleslady warned us of the return policy, and we chose to make the decision with the knowledge of that risk. The company did not give us any hassle picking up the bed nor giving the refund. Any hassle (like buying a second bed, waiting for it to come in, sleeping in the guest room) and loss of money was from our own stupidity and carelessness by not shopping around more for a new bed, and not going home to think about the purchase before signing the papers.

(As a side note, the lady at the furniture warehouse we usually visit told us to beware of return policies on beds because you never know who was sleeping on your bed before they repackaged it all up and sent it to you!)

I cannot comment on the long-term quality of this bed because of the mere two weeks it was in our home. However our friends have had theirs over a year and love it. I guess its one of those love/hate things where you just have to find out which one you are. That is, if you are willing to lose $200 plus anything else they talk you into buying at the store!

We could kick ourselves for throwing away that money, but I knew we would regret more keeping the purchase and being miserable for years and then finally throwing it out. My advice is to definately shop around before deciding on this bed, and make sure if you buy it, that you are willing to possibly lose out on some money if it does not work out.
