After doing extensive research about memory foam mattresses (I’ve never had one before), I decided to check out epinions. When I saw the number of reviews for Bergad, I had to check them out. After reading all of the reviews I was very intrigued. I went to bergad.com and was not too impressed with their website, but they had some basic information that was helpful. (I just noticed that they have a brand new website that looks much much better) I dug into the site and found out that they were located in Ford City, PA - only about an hour from where I live.
You know what that meant - off to Ford City I went. I called them first to see if they even had a showroom. They said absolutely and they would be happy to see me. I ended up getting there about 15 minutes after they closed because it is almost impossible to find. Once there, I couldn’t believe what I saw. They are located in an old industrial part of town that looks like something out of a World War II post-bombing scene. A long row of burned-out, shabby, rusty warehouses are situated along the river.
Perched on the outside of one of the most run-down warehouses is the Bergad Mattress sign. The front of the building has a glass door through which the (quote unquote) showroom can be seen. This room is about the size of a large walk-in closet and has the decor of an old boiler room, complete with some ancient contraption on the wall that may provide heat, but most definitely had a disagreement with the wall at some point in its past as evidenced by the scorch marks. There is a desk with a phone and a laptop (most likely the sales/customer service area) and a back room with more computer equipment peeking through the doorway.
Since the door was locked and nobody was there, I decided to walk around the side of the building since all the lights were on. Like a reluctant peeping Tom, I peered through one of the many jagged holes in the grimy glass warehouse windows and there the inner workings of the mattress world were unveiled. In what I can only say resembled what Pearl Harbor must have looked like after the attack in 1941, there were sewing machines lined up connected with cardboard taped together and pieces of foam everywhere. It was the kind of visual sensory overload that hurt your eyes. Let’s just say that OSHA probably hasn’t been to Ford City in awhile.
Now, perhaps the funniest part is that despite my adventures…
I decided that the story was so good that I just had to buy a mattress from Bergad. I called them, spoke to Roseann and ordered a king-sized mattress and box spring. Roseann was very customer-friendly and even gave me a $100 discount from a special they were running in some trade magazine that I knew nothing about! Since it was somewhat local, I avoided the shipping issues that other epinioners have talked about. One young man in a minivan showed up about 10 days later at my house - yes, I said a minivan! The things can roll/fold up enough to amazingly fit inside a minivan apparently. Since he was alone, I had to help him carry it inside and set it up. They had forgotten to send the frame that I had ordered - and when I called Roseann the next day she suggested just going to Walmart to get one instead and she would refund that money. I had to check in with her about 5 or 6 times but eventually I did get refunded the money as promised.
The mattress is great. It is firm, but quickly softens the right amount for your body. The edge support is surprisingly rigid enough. Transfer of movement (that’s where one side has a full glass of wine and you drop a bowling ball on the other side of the bed)is excellent - you don’t even notice when the other person moves around.
It definitely took a few weeks to get used to it though and the smell was quite bad for a long time. We had to take off the covering and wash them and air the mattress out a few times. It was probably at least 3-4 weeks before most of the smell was gone (not the 24 hours that they tell you). The pillows got mixed reviews (they are flat and firm) - I like them, but my wife needed to go back to a traditional one instead.
So, if you are interested in memory foam mattresses - buy one from Bergad - just don’t try to find the wizard behind the curtain
** UPDATE: Jan 26, 2007 **
We have now owned the mattress for one year and it is fabulous. It seems almost like it gets more comfortable over time. It is by far the best mattress we have ever slept on - the perfect mix of softness and firmness. The edge support is surprisingly firm. We love it!
