We had to return the SelectComfort 7000 mattress that we purchased recently because of the terribly offensive odor given off from the materials the mattress was constructed from. Presumably, it was the off-gassing of the foam material in the pad, but after several days it had not gotten better. The mattress itself was very comfortable–maybe the most comfortable of any we’ve ever purchased. But for a mattress costing more than $3,000, the odor problem shouldn’t happen.

Also, for a company that supposedly prides itself on customer service, it’s telephone delivery system and the delivery crew themselves were among the worst of any similar product we’ve purchased. There were seldom any operators to answer their phones, even after as much as a ten-minute wait. Then after leaving a message for them to call to arrange a delivery time, it took several days to get a call. The delivery crew was several hours late–outside their 4-hour time frame. They said they were “taking inventory” and couldn’t get away from the warehouse on time. The delivery people themselves could best be described as “wise guys”, cracking jokes between themselves at my wife’s expense (I wasn’t home–if I was, they would have been sent back to SelectComfort with their mattress!).

All in all, this was decidedly NOT a good buying experience for a product as expensive and highly-touted as SelecdtComfort.
