I love entertaining out-of-town visitors! Nothing like the warmth of spending some quality time relaxing with friends and family. It’s great stuff — for a couple days. But at some point, love ‘em like you do, you really want your life back to calm, quiet, and boring routine. Give visitors a comfy room with a great bed, and they just might feel like moving in. Let ‘em sleep on an InTex Air Mattress and they’ll be hittin’ the road faster than you can say “Pass the chips and dip.”
That’s why I love the InTex Recreation Double Airbed. This thing is so damn uncomfortable to sleep on that it should be sold to the kinky S&M crowd.
The mattress actually looks fairly decent when you first pull it out of the box. I like the soft, satiny velour feel of the mattress top — it helps keep the mattress from feeling icy cold when you first lay down on it. It’s got almost a cloth-like feel, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still use a sheet on it — it will feel a whole lot more natural to you if you do. The bottom and sidewalls feel sturdy and substantial — they’re 16 gauge (0.41mm thick), and they should be durable enough to handle any casual household or light outdoor camping sleep opportunity.
The real problem with this air mattress is that it slowly seeps air throughout the course of the night.
Inflate it to a comfortably firm level, seal the air inlet and outlet as tight as you can, and I guarantee your butt will be scraping the floor by morning, and your back is going to ache like you’ve been lugging bricks all night.
The air mattress features a quick-flow outlet so that you can deflate it quick as a wink. It’s essentially a huge honkin’ screw-off cap (you could inflate it with a leaf blower too, if the nozzle will squeeze into the outlet). Deflating works, but the cap doesn’t seal well, and that seems to be a big part of the problem I’ve been having. I got some Teflon tape out of the garage and put that around the fitting, figuring that would seal anything — and it did seem to slow the leaks to the point where my butt wasn’t totally flat to the floor by morning, but there was still a low leak happening somewhere.
From a glance at the box, it looks like it would be a pretty convenient solution to the problem of spare sleeping space for overnight guests. It’s small enough to easily fit in a garage cabinet, short shelf, or the back corner of any closet. It comes with a small electric pump so you don’t have to sit there huffing and puffing like a big, bad wolf just to get the thing inflated. It’s easy and quick to deflate, and it has the soft velour top to make it more appealing and comfortable.
Unfortunately, try as I might, I just can’t get the @#$%&* thing to reliably hold air for 8 hours of 1 or more adult lying on it. It’s a poor performing product that provides an uncomfortable nights sleep. Of course, there just might be times when that’s what you want….after all, the in-laws are threatening to come back for the Christmas holidays.
