I purchased the Imperial King Select Comfort “Sleep System” in December of 2000. It arrived at my home in eight boxes about one week later. I assembled the bed in about two hours. It was not extremely difficult, but was no where near effortless.
As I was assembling the bed, it appeared of decent quality with the exception of the “boxspring” portion. In my explanation the boxspring was nothing more than hard plastic jigsaw puzzle pieces that snap together in a difficult to figure out way.
The bed was comprised of approximately 6 to 7 inches of several layers of foam with an air chamber below. I would rate the comfort of this bed as average. I did enjoy the adjustable air chambers, however, the adjustability was not firmness, but rather the level you would like to sleep on.
The bed did not get harder or softer, but lowering the pressure in the air chambers would simply result in one’s body resting directly on the foam supported by the hard plastic boxspring. When the air chamber was fully inflated, the softness was nearly the same (since there was still 6 to 7 inches of foam directly below one’s body), with the height being increased by the air pocket underneath.
With the king size bed, there are two air chambers and a foam divider in the middle. When the air chambers were set on a mostly deflated setting, the foam divider made it nearly impossible to access the other side of the bed without getting up. The bed was shaped like a “W”.
However, only after ten weeks of use, I began having problems with the firmness controllers. The numbers would not register promptly on more than one occasion, and consequently, I was unable to adjust the bed at all during these times. I also noticed that the pillow top was bunching up and some of the seams were coming unsewn. They had not come completely unsewn, but being slept on for only ten weeks, I became concerned enough to begin the return process….a whole other story in itself.
I will keep the description of the return process short and sweet, but I would like to make it very clear that it was not a simple thing. I contacted customer service to request information on the return process. The return process consumed not only the shipping charges of nearly one hundred dollars, but much energy in disassembling the bed and packing it back into the boxes.
When the bed was sent, all of the foam layers were packed air tight and wrapped with plastic. When I was preparing my return, there was no way I was able to get all of the bed into the same number of boxes they were sent in. I would strongly suggest keeping the original boxes the bed is shipped in until the 90 day trial period has expired, as there were size limits to be dealt with when shipping the bed back.
During the return process, I had several significant errors to correct through negotiating with Select Comfort Customer Service Representatives. These problems led me to believe the company was not concerned about customer satisfaction during the return process. It was difficult to contact this company via telephone when beginning the return process. They were prompt, yet confusing, with email as correspondence.
If you are seriously considering this bed, I suggest to try a cheaper homemade version by putting some foam pad on top of an inflatable mattress to get a general idea of how this bed will feel for you.
When reflecting back on this experience, I would strongly deter any person unable to press this bed back into the same number of boxes it was shipped in, to strongly consider their purchase. I would not want anyone to keep the bed against their better judgement in order to avoid all of the frustrations that the return process can and does cause. The return process was time consuming, stressful, confusing, and physically exhausting for me. My experience with the 90 day trial on this bed is over, and now I can truly sleep.
