I’m here to recommend the Sealy Posturepedic mattress. But before I start, a little rant about the bedding industry.
If you’re looking to buy a mattress, you’ve probably realized the market has been stacked to make comparison shopping nearly impossible. The mattresses come in dozens of different models, some of which are the same, so the exact same product may have different names at different stores. Hah!–this does away with that pesky thing I like to call a price match guarantee. If the names don’t match, the products don’t match, so the store doesn’t have to match the price. Meanwhile though, it’s almost impossible for the buyer to keep everything straight. These are anticompetitive, anticonsumer practices at their finest. Do these people not take any pride in their product? If they really believed their mattress was better, they wouldn’t be condoning confusing sales practices, no?
This is all to say that although I’m recommending the Sealy Posturepedic “Fortune” mattress, that means almost nothing. The “Fortune” has probably been given ten different names at ten different stores by now. It’s more useful to say that I’m recommending a Sealy queen-size plush top mattress for which we paid $650. My strong suspicion is that any Sealy mattress in this price range will behave more or less the same.
In the two years we’ve had it, this mattress–the Sealy Posturepedic Fortune, or whatever it’s really called–has been great. I have no complaints about it at all. The mattress has held up well, without sags, squeaks or pointy coils, which were all problems I was originally worried about. My wife and I are both good sleepers and don’t have any special orthopedic needs, so I can’t speak for people with back pain, but I can say that I have slept great on this bed almost every night for two years–and when I haven’t, it’s been the fault of the neighbor’s howling dog, not the mattress.
To tell the truth, I barely notice the mattress at all. In my book, this is good. The Sealy doesn’t require any maintenance and in fact is flip-free by design. What this means–for the uninitiated–is that there is only one sleeping surface on the mattress, the top, so it doesn’t have to periodically be flipped the way some mattresses must. One could probably rotate the mattress without flipping it, but we’ve never done this and haven’t felt a need to.
