I had walked by the Select Comfort many times in our local mall wishing I had the money to buy one. Well, one day as I walked past there was no one to be seen in the store. I was surprised that there wasn’t someone standing in the doorway begging me to come in. I walked in and figured I’d look around and leave when the salesperson came back onto the salesfloor. I sat down on a blue bed at the side of the store and thought that it would be the least comfortable thing to ever sleep on. How wrong I was!
The salesperson still was nowhere in sight, so I laid back and started pressing the buttons on the control. I loved it from the first moment. As I lay there the salesperson came back into the store. She had obviously gone out for a smoke break from the smell of her. I had planned to leave, and her odor was giving me enough of a reason to do so, but I was addicted. I wanted one and I wanted it bad.
The salesperson explained how the bed worked and why it felt so good. It is definitely something you would never be able to understand from watching the commercial. It is actually better than Gary Allen says in the infomercial.
The model I was on at first was their Classic model, which is Select Comfort’s entry level model. The salesperson had me also try the Elite and the Ultra. I couldn’t believe that these actually felt better than the first. I didn’t think it would be possible. I decided that I wanted one. I figured that I hated the Simmons Beautyrest that my wife and I were on and with the Select Comfort, we would both be able to set it where we wanted it and both agree on a mattress. The decision that I made was both one of the stupidest and smartest decisions I have ever made. Smartest because I love the bed and stupidest because I bought the bed without asking my wife. I had to go home and tell her that I spent a lot of money without her input, but with the “Sleep Guarantee” that Select has you can send the bed back for a full refund if you don’t like it. I figured that we’d keep the Simmons Uglyrest just in case and try the Select. I only had to sleep on the couch for one night.
I bought a queen Ultra Pillowtop set, which I am told is their most popular sale. I also got a new cotton mattress pad and two excellent foam pillows. The salesperson told me to expect two weeks for delivery, and I was a bit saddened, but the bed showed up after only a week. I came home to an angry wife pointing to a bunch of boxes in the middle of the living room. After a little shy smile and a “Want to help me make the bed?” she loosened up and we started putting the Select together.
It was a bit scary and my wife asked more than once why they didn’t send people out to set these things together. Her comment was that you would figure they would for the price you have to pay. I said that if we liked it it would be well worth it and we started screwing together the foundation. NOTE: The foundation has changed this year and it has become even easier to put together!
After setting up the foundation we set up the mattress and laid down. She got a big smile on her face and I knew I was off the hook. It did take a few days to get used to it completely, but we knew from day one that we liked it. I don’t toss and turn as much, my wife was able to change the mattress as she progressed in pregnancy and her body changed, and we have never slept better.
Here are a few things I love about the Ultra model:
You don’t have to flip and turn your mattress. If you think it feels like it’s sagging, press a button and it’s not anymore.
The mattress hugs your body and I don’t have the pressure on my shoulder that I used to have on springs pushing up against me. No more numb hands in the morning.
The mattress is cotton and rayon and with the cotton mattress pad it breathes well and I don’t overheat. Most mattresses in this price range are a polyester blend and I cook on these. Word of advice: check out Select’s dual zone heated mattress pad for the winter. They adjust individually just like the beds. My side is off and the wife’s side is set to max heat.
If you want to move it you can fit a queen size mattress and foundation into the back seat of a Chevy Malibu. I speak from experience. Try doing that with a spring mattress.

A few dislikes:
The old foundation tended to make a bit of noise when I would roll over. Customer service was a gem though when I called the 800 number. They had a “squeek kit” to me in no time. From my experience with the new foundation this is a non issue now.
The woman who sold it to me was unbearable. From the smell of her smoke to the incessant stories about her life I could not stand to be in her presence. I bought the second one from the store across town at the new mall and had a much better shopping experience.
We only kept this bed two years since we moved into a new place with a bigger bedroom. We upgraded to a king size Imperial model and love it even more.
