I hope to answer a number of critics seen on this site with this review, so let’s get started
- Smell - yes there is a chemical smell (like a new car) but it does dissipate over time, an not enough to keep you awake
- Price - Overpriced, as an engineer, total cost of manufacture (labor, materials, etc) is around $350.00 for the 5000 series bed. My price paid - $1799.00
- Bubble - Any setting over 45, you will feel like your sleeping on a bubble. I am 6′4″ at 250, and my wife is 5′3″ at 135lbs
- Noise - The motor is whisper quiet, and comments to the contrary, the unit is defective.
- Set up - Mattress only took 20 min, this is not rocket science. Take you time, read the instructions (big graphical instructions)
- Delivery - 5 days after I walked out of the store.
- Bed looks lopsided - Ahh, the tight sheet syndrome. My wife is a 40 and I’m a 65. With the mattress pad installed, we saw no difference in the side of the bed.
- Materials - Not consistent with the price paid. Pressure injected plastic and foam (which is a chemical allowed to expand) is not worth a 1000+. Especially the difference in bedding from the 5000 to the 9000. The only difference is the compressor and the foam in between the chambers and the mattress cover.
What makes my overall experience so unique is what we added to the factory bed. Our old bed had a 2 inch memory foam topper. We exchanged the foam that came with the bed with the 2 inch memory foam topper. Essentially we turned our 5000 series into a 9000 series for $150 bucks. What a difference. The bubble sensation is totally gone, and the mattress is firm, supportive and soft at the same time. I think we have finally found the combination that works for us.
The foam we replaced is said to be specially designed for the bed, thicker in areas and so on. The reality is there is no difference in the compression force needed - I know - I measured it with instruments.
It is a totally different bed that an inner spring. Getting past that sensation and the astronomical price are the largest obstacles to comfort. Our memory foam topper made the difference for us.
BTW - the mattress cover on the 5000 and 9000 is the same.
