My husband first heard about this mattress when listening to a radio talk show host rave about his sleep number bed.
Our mattress was getting pretty worn and we were not getting as good a sleep as we had before. The concept of the select comfort bed sounded interesting. Sleeping on air, adjustable for each person, relieving the pressure points. We decided to visit our select comfort store at the mall to test the mattresses.
We were all hyped up for it. We knew they were pricey, but they sounded so comfortable. I fully expected to lie down on the mattress and feel pure luxury.
When you try the mattress, the salesperson puts you on the lowest of their line to find your sleep number. Ok. I think I’m a 25 - 30. My husband is about a 50. This bed had a noisy air pump and felt like an air bed you’d use for camping. I was extremely disappointed. But I thought, hey, this is the bottom of the barrel bed. Let’s see what happens as we progress through the beds. We tried them all out and I only found the top of the line, 7000 model to have a “feel” that I liked. The 5000 was okay, but was just missing something. I was really not impressed with the beds. I kept thinking that for $3000, I could get a very luxurious traditional mattress. But - you don’t have to flip these, they have a 20 year warranty, they’re supposed to better relieve pressure points.
I decided to research the beds and found a love ‘em or hate ‘em attitude. I checked into Nautilus and their memory foam, but decided against it. I couldn’t test out the mattress, it didn’t have a numerical display of the level of inflation, and I read a review from a guy who had owned both a SC and a Nautilus and while the select comfort gave him the feeling of changing from firmer to softer, the Nautilus just gave him a feeling of getting higher or lower.
Several months later, my husband and I decided to purchase the Select Comfort. I really, really wanted to like this bed. I was hung up on the price, though. The salesperson told me that we could get the 5000 model and get the memory foam topper and get about 80% of the “feel” of the 7000. For me, $2500 for 80% of the feel worked. We got the king size (graduating from a queen) because I had read to not even get this bed in less than a king. The individual air bags restrict where you sleep. I would not consider this bed if you have a tendency to sleep toward the middle of the bed and your partner has a significantly different setting.
We order. It arrives 11 days later via UPS in 6 boxes. You first assemble the foundation. It is made out of plastic similar to a plastic tool case. It basically snaps together, although we used a rubber mallet to help some of the pieces along. The foundation legs are then attached. This part took the most time. We could not get the legs attached tight enough. It took us about 1 1/2 hours for the foundation assembly because of the legs. My husband (who was Mr. Gung-Ho about this bed) is suddenly disappointed with how cheap the components are. I defend it, saying how all the reviews say “yes, it looks cheap, but wait until you sleep on it!”)
Anyway, you throw fabric over the foundation and then set up the mattress. You first take off the pillow top, set it aside and then you are left with a hollowed out mattress sitting on the foundation. To support the sides you put in four cheap pieces of foam that are joined at each corner with plastic. There is a piece of foam that is put at the bottom of the mattress, you put the airbags in, hook up the pump and inflate, add one more foam layer, zip the pillow top back on and voila’ - throw on the brand new comforter/sheet set/mattress pad/pillow sham/I got a new bed, let’s do it up/stuff - DONE. The whole time you’re thinking “I can’t believe the money I spent on this. I better get the absolute best sleep I’ve ever had in my life.” At least that’s what I was thinking.
Bedtime. Play with the numbers. I could not get to sleep for 2 HOURS. I woke up several times because I was HOT. Okay, I am like a furnace. I give off a lot of body heat. But I have never felt like I was burning before on a mattress. Yes, burning. This was before the memory foam topper (that arrived the next day). I couldn’t wait for that topper to come because I read that it helps regulate body temperature. My first night was misery. I woke up with bags under my eyes and everyone telling me how tired I looked.
Next day. Memory foam topper arrives. Immediately put on the bed, hoping for some alleviation of the heat problem. It helped - a little. I still have woken up feeling hot, but not as bad as the first night. My other complaint with the bed is the whole air bed feel. (I know, I know, it IS an air bed.) I go to bed and really feel like I should be in a tent instead of my bedroom. Even with my foam layers, the thing still feels, well, like a Coleman air bed with foam layers. An EXPENSIVE Coleman air bed with foam layers that wakes me up because I feel like I’m burning. Yeah, baby.
One night I asked my hubby to set my number for me. “Please put me down to 30.” I feel myself going gently downward. I relax. I realize about five minutes later that I’m in a hole. He put it down to a 5 “to be funny.” If your partner likes “to be funny” you may want to consider the dual, wired remotes so you can set your own sleep number, thank you.
I asked hubby to rate it out of ten - he gave it a six, but he says he likes it more each day.
I cannot sleep well on it. To be fair, we’ve only had it for a week, so maybe my opinion on it will change. If it does, I will update. But at this time, I wish we had gotten a traditional mattress.
