I’ve had both a bad and now a good experience with Tempurpedic mattresses. It all seems to be in getting the correct mattress for your particular needs.
A few years ago I purchased a Deluxe Tempurpedic mattress thinking it would help my severe back problems (I’ve had cauda equina syndrome, two back operations, a fusion, and experience chronic pain). The first night I slept on the mattress I awoke the next morning to an extreme, entire body ache that was distressing. The next night was no better. Additionally, getting into and out of the bed was a challenge because I sank down into the mattress and it tended to “cradle” my body so completely that it made it difficult to move.
Later I found out that the mattress has a break-in period and the recommendation is to remove the zip-on mattress cover to facilitate the break-in. Needless to say I was disillusioned.
Recently I began experiencing some complications with my back problems and decided that my inner spring mattress that I ended up getting was causing more problems than it was helping. Almost exclusively owning foam mattresses in the past, I began to consider my options and began re-investigating Tempurpedic mattresses.
I was intrigued to learn that Tempurpedic had a new bed with a reformulated material that increased the per cubic pound weight from 5.3 lbs to 7 lbs, and that this new formula was much easier to move around on. I also found out that the company had expanded their mattress offerings from three models to now a total of six.
This new reformulated material mattress, called The SolutionsBed, is only offered in a few select dealer stores. You can’t even order this bed direct from the company, which is probably a good thing because you really need to try out the various mattresses to find out which one works for you. I was able to spend an hour on one of my three visits to the store where I purchased this mattress from just trying out the bed. I highly recommend it, especially for such an important investment in one’s health.
The SolutionsBed mattress has all of the initial feel the other Tempurpedic mattresses, and is probably closest to the EuroBed model. It is much easier to move around in, but is a much more firm bed — it’s a little surprising when you first lay down on it because you do sink in, but after you’ve been laying down for a while you can tell that it is an extremely firm mattress.
An over-simplified way of comparing The SolutionsBed to the other Tempurpedic mattresses has been explained to me this way: if a 5.3 lb/cubic foot Tempurpedic mattress feels like sleeping on a bunch of marshmallows, The SolutionsBed (7 lb/cubic foot) feels like sleeping on a bunch of mini marshmallows. The feeling is definitely one of more refined support, which is probably why they call this their therapeutic model.
My experience with this particular model has been completely the opposite of my first experience. It did take me one night to get accustomed to the new feel, but I felt that even on that first night I slept much more soundly. Now after six weeks of using the bed, I won’t ever go back to an inner spring mattress (even a therapeutic model like I had), and any other foam mattress that I might buy down the road will definitely have a tough act to follow.
