Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed 3000 Series
I bought the 3000 model queen size about 2 1/2 years ago. I have very mixed feelings about it. I bought it because I had trouble sleeping on a conventional mattress (mainly back pain) and was averaging 10 hours per night to feel rested.
Background
I tried the models available at the local SC store. This may have been the first problem, as they did not have every model available to test. The beds felt good in the store, but so did my previous spring mattress so I was wary. I figured anything would be better than my old mattress but I couldn’t bring myself to opt for the more expensive models. Being generally handy, I also opted out of buying the support (which would be the equivalent of a box spring for a regular mattress) and built my own. I made it out of wood that does not warp so the base has been perfectly flat and sturdy throughout its use. So I dropped $400 on the 3000 model alone. I also made the mistake of buying one of their very pricey mattress pads with a layer of memory foam (which I found humorous since their salesmen repeatedly trash-talked that type of bed). My rationale was that if I didn’t end up liking the mattress I would still have a decent topper to go on my old bed. Also, to go up to the next model was quite pricey and seemingly the only difference was the thin cushioning on top of it. That didn’t seem right/economical to me.
The GOOD
The bed was delivered and I set it up very easily. My average sleep almost instantly went down to 8 hours. Even though I am somewhat disappointed with the mattress, it’s hard to argue with that improvement!!! If you have the same results this mattress is certainly worth the cost. Additionally, I do have less lower back pain than before. The bed is easy to move and very light.
The BAD
I still have problems sleeping, but they are now different problems. The big issue I have with this bed is that unless I am perfectly centered on my air chamber, which is barely wider than my skinny frame (5′11″ - 150 lbs.), the chamber tends to collapse and makes my body roll to one side or the other. Half of my body then ends up sleeping in the “gutter” as I call it (the center of the whole unit which is padded with a useless piece of rippled foam) or on the firm edges of the mattress. Many mornings I wake up practically sideways because during the night I decide that that’s the only way I’m going to avoid the gutter. In this matter, this mattress is much like a regular air mattress which collapses and rolls you to the center or edges. The second problem is that it is quite difficult to find a comfortable setting. Once you do it’s great, but since my cheap model doesn’t have the numbers on the remote (only up and down), it is very difficult to find that one perfect spot.
Conclusion
I can’t be certain, but I think that perhaps a better model would have been the way to go so that I could actually know and use my sleep number which is not possible on the cheap 3000 model. I’m really surprised that more people haven’t complained about the mattress collapsing either. This is my biggest complaint. But it’s hard to argue with needing 2 less hours per night of sleep and with having much less (basically none) lower back pain. I am currently shopping for a latex foam mattress but again fear there must be some drawbacks.
