When doing routine cleaning of our sheets and mattress pad, I unzipped our 5000 series Queen size mattress topper to look inside at the condition of the foam. I’m not sure why I did this - I guess it was my inquisitive nature. At first glance, the “egg crate” shaped pad that’s underlying the mattress topper looked fine.
To my surprise, when I rolled that layer back, I found a layer of mildew on the underside of that foam layer and on the top side of the air bladders. At first, I figured I’d just spray it with Lysol and call it a day - but then I decided to Google “mattress mildew cleaning”. I was going to spray the mattress foam and bladder with a mild bleach and water solution, but I figured I’d check with Select Comfort customer service first (since I didn’t want to void our warranty).
A quick call to customer service yielded them shipping us new bladders and foam UNDER WARRANTY! The reason you ask? Select Comfort re-formulated their foam/fabrics to include a anti-microbial chemical in 2005 (our mattress was purchased in 2002).
Bottom line, this company stepped up to the plate to support their past customer and has impressed this buyer with their commitment to providing a high level of service. The only thing that they could have done better - they could have sent all prior customers a notice about this change. Mildew and mold are a know health issue for some. Hope this update helps.
Only negative comment regarding the product is the “box spring” mattress base is plastic and we noticed a sag in the center of our bed. I’m not sure if it’s due to the configuration of our metal frame, but I simple added some center support/shims to make the base level and now the bed is fine.
