Thank God I bought a new bed. I had been sleeping on a futon for five years and was miserable. I had wanted to purchase a new bed for ages, but never seemed to get around to it. Well, I had finally had enough - I was buying a new bed come Fell or Fly Water.
The Search Began: Knowing that I was about to invest a large amount of money, I decided to do my homework. First, I read just about every Review on Mattresses on Epinions. I made notes comparing different brands and styles covering everything from price to comfort. Next, I surveyed my friends to see what type of mattresses they slept on and how they liked them. With that done, I had a few brands that I was interested in and set out to price them.
Who knew that rolling and laying around on a bed would be so much work!? Mattress shopping is definitely not fun. I started my search at The Mattress Firm after spying a Sale ad in the newspaper. They carry a few of the brands that I had narrowed down to, and thought they’d be a good place to start. There was one salesman working by himself and there were no other customers in the store. You could tell this guy was lonely. He followed me around from bed to bed yammering away about foam and coils and pillowtops. I found him annoying - especially since I was following the advice I got on Epinions and was laying in my true sleeping position - which is not especially graceful or flattering. I just wanted him to leave me alone and let me sprawl in peace. I received the pricing information and was on my way - but not before I was informed of their Price Matching Policy.
Etcetera, Etcetera I continued comparing prices at various stores, most of them without any sales people around to help at all - from one extreme to another! I finally found the lowest price - at JC Penney - who didn’t have the mattress I wanted in stock but could order it. Not one for waiting, I went back to The Mattress Firm and asked them to match the price, since they did same day delivery.
I’ve never seen a salesman fight so hard to NOT make a sale. After nearly an hour of negotiation, going back and forth, calling the manager for approval, hemming and hawing, and calling JC Penney to verify I hadn’t just yanked the quoted price out of my butt, they finally agreed to match the price. I was about to put this issue to bed. (Ha! I kill me!)
My bed was delivered and I have been sleeping on it for a few weeks now. I could not be happier. After sleeping on that futon for years, I came to expect stiffness and discomfort every morning. Not anymore. I am sleeping soundly and comfortably and my back pain has been eliminated. I am in heaven.
Tips and Helpful Hints:
* Go to the manufacturer website at http://www.stearnsandfoster.com for a dealer locater to speed up your search.
* Negotiate. Do NOT accept the first price quoted. Even if they act like you’re asking for their first born child, they WILL go down on the price. I bought my mattress for about 50% of the posted price in the store. Even though it was a pain to deal with the reluctance at The Mattress Firm, I ended up getting the price I wanted.
* Don’t let the comparison shopping confuse you. Thanks to my fellow Epinions users, I learned that a Deighton is the same as a Dorington is the same as a Dovenby. Where S&F is concerned, if it starts with the same letter, it’s the same bed. They just apply different names for each dealer so that it’s more difficult to comparison shop.
* When you’re laying on the mattress to test the comfort, pretend you’re at home. Stretch out. Lay on your side with your knee up by your shoulder if that’s the position you really sleep in. Yeah, you’ll feel like a dork, but it’s the best way to find the mattress that’s most comfortable for YOU.
No one used to enjoy staying at my house because the bed was so uncomfortable. Now there’s no excuse - so maybe now I can get someone to sleep with me!
