Select Comfort Sleep Number 5000 Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 5000 Overall, we're very happy with the bed. We bought this bed because our old mattress was a hand-me-dow...

My husband and I decided to go mattress shopping because we had an old sagging queen size mattress, and we wanted to get a new good quality King. I have always had lower back issues, but the pain has been worse since I’ve been carrying our 20 lb. 6 month old son everywhere. I had seen the ads on T.V. for the Sleep Number bed, so we went to our local mall to check it out. Wow! As soon as we tried these beds, we fell in love with them. As other people have described here, we were instructed to lie down on the lowest level bed to find our individual Sleep Numbers. Mine was 40, while my husband’s was 55. We tried all of the different beds there — the only difference really seemed to be that the more expensive models had higher pillowtops, and quieter motors. I couldn’t see spending an extra $1,000 for the top model, when you could just go to the local linen store and get an extra pillowtop for a lot less than that, but we did want the quieter motor. So we agreed on the middle of the line, the 5000 with the foundation and the optional legs.

Well, I’m glad that I did some research and came to this website before we bought the bed at the store! One of the reviewers mentioned that the same bed is available through QVC.com for less money. Sure enough, I called QVC, and it’s the same bed with 1″ less pillowtop, dual remotes instead of a choice of single or dual, and a different fabric cover than the one in the store. Well, for $500 less — yes, we saved $500 — who cares about that stuff?!!

I ordered it, and it arrived within 4 days via UPS in several boxes. It took us a couple of hours to get the whole thing together, and yes, it is upsetting to spend a lot of money on plastic parts, but it seems very sturdy once it has been put together. You have to remember too, that you’re paying for the idea of it — it’s a very clever idea!

One thing that I noticed right away, is that it is a whole lot easier to make up this bed than other beds. A comparable good quality traditional mattress is very difficult to make up because it is so incredibly heavy. But because this is an air mattress, it is really easy to lift up the corners to get the bottom sheet on, and tuck things in. Another thing that I realized as we were putting it together is that when we ultimately move to a house from our apartment, we can easily break it down into manageable components that will definitely fit up and down stairs and around corners. A plus for those of us on the move!

My husband and I tried out our Sleep Number bed right away. We tried out different numbers, and settled in for the night. Well, let me tell you, I have had bad, bad back pain for about 12 years now, and after just one night’s sleep, I didn’t have any! Seriously! The bed cradled me throughout the night, no matter what position I was in. And to those of you who are stomach sleepers — this is great. I sleep on all sides, and it was/is still great! We’ve had this bed for about a month now, and both my husband and I love this bed. My backaches have been greatly reduced, and I feel like I’ve gotten a better night’s sleep. (I sound like a commercial, but it’s true!) When I’ve had a particularly hard day, I can make the bed softer to cradle me even more, and that makes such a difference! This adjustable feature would also be great throughout pregnancy, when finding a comfortable position to sleep is so very difficult, especially in the last trimester!

The one big negative that I’ve seen is that even though this is the quieter motor of the two that are on the market, it is still a bit too loud to change in the middle of the night while your partner is sleeping (It’s like suddenly turning on a fan or a white noise machine.) And, I agree with others in this forum, that the foam section in the middle (a thin vertical piece placed between the two separate air chambers to keep them in place) presents too much of a barrier between the two sides of the bed. You can still roll over on top of it and it feels fine, but it does tend to keep you on your own individual sides when you’re sleeping. We have not had any problems with the chambers deflating or anything like that. After reading some of the other reviews again, I thought that I should address this issue. When I originally read about inflating and deflating throughout the night, I imagined that the motor would constantly be making noises to maintain the desired sleep number. Not true, at least not so far. Once the number is set, it seems to stay that way without any additional input from the motor, so it’s quiet throughout the night. As well, I have noticed that the mattress does slip around a bit more on its foundation (maybe an inch or so off the base) versus a traditional mattress, but that’s because it’s so much lighter, and I’ve found that it’s not that big of a deal to move it back into place in the morning when making the bed. Like some of the other reviewers here, I too, am a hot sleeper, and have found the bed to be somewhat hot(or is it just me?) But I solved that problem by getting a mattress cover that was all cotton, and using a lightweight all cotton blanket on top with a thin quilt, rather than a big comforter like I had used in the past. Problem solved!

In sum, this bed is fabulous! It is about the same price as a good traditional mattress, it has a 20 year warranty, and it doesn’t need to be flipped. What more could you want?

P.S. — I originally put down that we spent $2,000 on this bed, but we just got the credit card bill — we actually spent $1722.19 + tax!! (Versus $2,300 list price for Eastern King mattress, foundation, and legs in the store + tax!) Gotta love QVC!
