If you’ve been keeping up with me, you know I had to burn my previous mattress (Spring Air) and needed to get a good, solid, extra firm mattress before I slept on the floor with the dogs.
Now we’re all happy sleeping on our Lady Englander King size Very Firm mattress set. It is unique for it’s construction, using the heaviest (thickest) wire for it’s coils, and then wire-binding them together in several directions to distribute the weight and strengthen the mattress. The border wire is heavy and strong for us edge sleepers - you don’t feel like you’re going to fall off the side, so you rest better. Because the coils are of heavier gauge wire and are coiled in larger loops than the big name brand products (Sealy, Serta, Simmons), you can’t use coil count as a comparison. Lady Englander has fewer coils by count, but the coils are larger and stronger. It looks rather ordinary (ours has no pillow top) from the outside.
It is, with all this mass of heavy wires, a heavy mattress, so excercise caution and give it a wide berth when flipping it.
Price-wise, they say that because they don’t have nationwide promotional advertising, the money they save is the money you save when purchasing their product. My updated opinion is that they manufacture an average to inferior product, and in the long run was very disappointing.
Oddly enough, we located this mattress by pure accident; we decided to stop at a dubious looking mattress store (Fly By Night Mattresses and More kind of place), and were greeted by a used-car looking salesman (I should have KNOWN better right there) who had little working knowledge of the product. He did, however, have the copies of Consumer Reports about the Englander, and a cutaway sample to show the construction. That’s all it took. The Englander mattress sells itself on initial appearance of quality.
Stronger, well made, less money - and oh, honey, is it comfortable when new - but that changed in two years.
JUNE 2003 UPDATE:
Well, folks, I’m sad to say this one wore out like the rest. My double-my-size hubby dent stayed in the mattress when we rotated it (the standard once a month rotation), so now both sides are ‘dented’. Of course, the warranties never cover this sort of thing, and even if they did, you’d have to ship the mattress back to the factory. With shipping costs these days, I think it would cost as much as a new mattress - SOME OTHER BRAND.
The edges are still tight, and the center is strong - which makes the body ‘dents’ more aggravating.
As comfortable as it was when new, it didn’t take very long to wear down. I have to change my opinion to NO GO on this product.
