*See below for my recent update.
After 10 years of marriage and two boys playing and bouncing on our bed, I decided that a new mattress was in order. After convincing my husband that it was needed, I started to do research, both in-store and on different mattress company web sites. I checked out Consumer Reports, Consumer Reviews, and this site: Epinions.com. What I found out was that many people had purchased the Comfortaire Cerulean Mattress and it seemed like almost all of the customers were truly pleased with the mattress. So we dove in and took the risk on a mattress.
I called Nationwide Mattress and submitted a request for an order. I was put through to Richard. He handled all of my insecurities of internet purchases with ease. He answered all of my questions, even the one’s I thought were insignificant. And then we bought a mattress. Richard told me that the mattress would arrive in 2-3 weeks, and it was here in 10 days. So far, no problems.
The mattress was shipped in two very big boxes with lots of air-bubble wrap and after unpacking the parts, it was very difficult to keep our sons and their friends out of the boxes. These boxes are the perfect size for a very big fort. (How many of you are parents? If you are, you know the fascination of big boxes). Anyway, I got the pieces up-stairs and was able to put it together within 45 minutes. Again, so far, so good.
The first night getting ready to go to bed, both my husband and I tried to adjust each side of the mattress to our settings. At first, it seemed that this was to be the best on-line purchase we ever made. Those first few nights things were great! Then things began to go downhill. The air bags smelled like my grandmother’s old hot water bottles. We tried for several nights more to adjust/readjust the firmness of our sides of the bed. It just did not seem to be working.
The following week, I contacted Richard. I told him of my concerns and he gave me suggestions for the smell; put some fabric softener sheets on the bags. As for the discomfort and not being able to get a good nights sleep, he used as an example, new shoes needing to be broken in before becoming comfortable.
So we tried for several more weeks to adjust to the mattress, and it was just not working. I called Richard again about return information, and what was needed to send the mattress back. He told me that the mattress can be sent back within the 90 day trial period, and in the ORIGINAL boxes and ORIGINAL air-bubble packing materials. This information was new to me. There was no requirement stated in the written statement about original packing materials. I was dumbfounded. Our boxes had become forts, and the air-bubble wrap was used as noise machines to scare dragons. How was I to know that these things should have been kept?
Richard was able to make a “special deal and pull some strings” and get me two new boxes ( at a cost to us of $35 to $45). I found out that I am also required to ship back these two huge boxes at my expense. I was also surprised by that, most of the internet/catalog purchases we have made were easy to return, usually at minimal cost to us. I have tried to make arrangements with both FedEx and UPS to pick up the two boxes, but not being a business or having an account, it is not possible. I now have to try to get these boxes to a mail store and it will probably cost another $75.00 to get these shipped.
This has become one of the worst purchases with problems I have encountered in a great while. Please do not purchase this unless you have the patience and extra money needed to return it if necessary.
*** Since publishing this review, I was able to send the mattress back to the company through my local FedEx office. After Richard received the mattress, I got an e-mail stating that the cover had to be destroyed due to not being shipped in the original plastic wrapping and not being dry-cleaned, and was now considered unusable. I was also told that it would cost $229 for him to replace the cover and that would need to be deducted from a refund, if I wanted the refund. Or I could get the mattress cover sent back to me with a check for $640. I had the cover sent back, along with our check. This situation has cost us a loss of over $300, with box cost, shipping and now replacement of the cover. I am seriously considering contacting the Better Business Bureau for lack of information given to buyers regarding returns. Richard was a great customer salesperson until we decided to return the mattress.
Again, please do not purchase this mattress.
