I purchased two original twin-sized Aerobeds a few years ago, figuring they would offer my houseguests a little more comfort than the couch or worse, the floor. My AeroBeds haven’t just come in handy exclusively for my houseguests, but have also come in handy when I moved across country and found myself bed-less; my Aerobed had to serve as a full-time bed for over a month.

Quality:

The Aerobed may look like your typical twenty-dollar air mattress, however the Aerobed’s materials feel much sturdier than the herd of cheap air mattresses on the market. According to Aero Products Inc. the AeroBed is made of 18 gauge, heavy-duty poly-vinyl chloride; making the AeroBed puncture resistant. One of the AeroBed’s best assets is its recessed pump. Unlike many air mattresses equipped with electric pumps, the pump on the AeroBed is integrated inside the mattress so you don’t have a bulky unit sticking out of the side. This recessed pump also enables sheet covers to go over the AeroBed flawlessly.

Set-up:

The last thing I want to do when I am tired is spend all night setting up an air mattress. The Aerobed is perfect for those who need to set-up sleeping quarters, but don’t want to spend a lot of time doing so. It takes about 1 minute to fully inflate the AeroBed using its electric pump (the bed can not over inflate). In the morning the AeroBed can deflate almost instantly using its release valve and be stored in its little Aero-bag.

Comfort:

When I ordered my twin sized AeroBeds I was expecting them to be a lot more comfortable than those less expensive air mattresses on the market. In reality, though, this bed isn’t that much more comfortable than the cheaper brands. The contours of the AeroBed do help provide some extra comfort, however this is still not a bed that I would want to sleep on for more than a few nights at a time. If you plan on using your AeroBed for more than just a couple nights a year, I highly suggest buying the optional deluxe cover for $30.00 or getting a memory foam pad (your houseguests will thank you). Like most air mattresses, you can adjust the firmness of the AeroBed by releasing or adding air. One should note that the Twin-size AeroBed can accommodate up to 650 pounds.

One of my biggest gripes with the original AeroBed is that it sits very low on the ground. If you want a raised version of an AeroBed you will have to fork over even more cash for the raised version or you can buy an optional frame for the bed at nearly 130 dollars. Since the twin-sized AeroBed does retail for an already hefty 90 dollars, you would think the option of being able to raise it off the floor would come as standard equipment.

Reliability:

The AeroBed’s better than average reliability record was the main reason why I purchased this air mattress. I have purchased many air mattresses in the past, only to have them start leaking within a few uses or just be DOA. While those mattresses were much cheaper, it got quite expensive spending 25 dollars every time I needed an air mattress. The AeroBed does seem to be living up to its claim that it’s “puncture resistant”; I have had absolutely no problems when it comes to air leaks. If anything goes wrong with your AeroBed, Aero Products Inc. offers a limited 1-year warranty.

Price/ Availability:

While the AeroBed was once a “TV only” offer, it can now be purchased at most online stores that sell mattresses, i.e. Sears.com, Overstock, etc. I purchased my two twin-sized beds for around $100.00 each after taxes (that was 2 years ago). Looking online, it seems that the prices have went down considerably over the past couple years, with some prices being as low as 60 dollars for the original twin AeroBeds. One should note that the original AeroBed is available in twin, full, and queen sizes.

Conclusion:

The original AeroBed twin bed is definitely better than your typical Wal*Mart twin air mattress, but it’s no technological wonder likes those infomercials make it sound. The AeroBed is simply a reliable air mattress that is, at the same time, easy to use and is adequately comfortable. I recommend this bed over regular air mattresses, but certainly not a substitute for a conventional mattress.
