How do I love thee Innerspace foam mattress??? Let me count the ways. On second thought, let me tell you the ONE thing wrong with this mattress. It’s hot to lay on – plain and simple. But if you’re cold blooded this mattress may just be the ticket. If you’re pre-menopausal like I am, either avoid this mattress like the plague, or buy a featherbed to put on top. (I bought a featherbed and now it’s cool as a cucumber to sleep on.)
Just 4 years ago I bought a Beautyrest queen complete mattress set from a major department store and paid beaucoup bucks for it. After just 4 years, for some reason, the mattress sags towards the center. I had a pro-rated 10 year warranty on the set, but I just didn’t want the hassle of dealing with a department store on warranty issues.
If you’ve ever tried to buy “just a queen mattress only, no box springs”, it’s nearly impossible to find anyone to sell just the mattress. Of course, the salesman will tell you that unless you buy a set, your new mattress will be destroyed in no time. Well, I didn’t need the box springs, and who cares if the 2 pieces match anyhow – they are covered by the dust ruffle and comforter.
I happened to be watching the presentation on Home Shopping Network for the Innerspace Foam Mattress. I ordered one as the price was just $190 plus shipping. Now – shipping is where they really get you for a steep amount. UPS shipping was $48, but then again I didn’t have to pay any sales tax so the total price wasn’t bad. Did you hear that right – UPS SHIPPING??? Yes, these mattresses come from Dalton, GA rolled up like a jelly roll and they fit into a regular cardboard box. The box measures approximately 65 inches long by 18 inches by 18 inches. And it’s fairly lightweight as mattresses go. You can easily slide it down the hall and into the bedroom. If your bedroom is upstairs, it’s still easy to maneuver if you have someone to help you.
You remove the mattress from the box and lay it on your box spring or platform. It’s covered with cellophane wrap. Carefully cut the two strips of cellophane and it unrolls and starts to expand. In just a few minutes it will expand to 90% of its size, and within 24 hours it is fully expanded and ready to sleep on.
This version is one of the lower cost mattresses this company sells. So don’t expect much in the cotton-polyester cover. It’s off white in color and pretty blah, not damask. Underneath the cover one side of the mattress has cotton ticking for a summer side, and wool ticking on the reverse side for winter. There is a label on the mattress telling which side is which. But to be honest, I kept mine on the summer side until I got my featherbed. Now I flip it over once a month to keep the mattress even. It’s very lightweight – one person can do it easily.
Getting used to sleeping on a foam mattress does take awhile. Took me around 2 weeks, but after that learning curve, it is pure heaven. I don’t toss and turn anymore, and a lot of mornings when I wake up, I don’t believe I’ve moved all night. It does take more effort to actually get out of bed as there are no springs in this mattress to help give you a boost. This foam mattress is also VERY FIRM, so if you prefer anything softer, I would say this mattress is not for you.
The mattress is hypoallergenic, CFC free, flame retardant, and is treated against dust mites, mold and mildew. I have allergies, and I think they have eased somewhat since buying this mattress. By the way, I’ve had it about 10 months now, and it doesn’t show any signs of sagging. However, if you lay in the same spot all night without moving at all, it will be a little sunk in when you get up, but quickly springs back to normal.
The mattress is just 6 inches thick, so even the cheap fitted sheets will work with it, you don’t need the deep pocket kind. You may need deep pocket sheets if you use a featherbed.
Besides the foam being hot, there is one more thing you may want to consider: These mattresses are only sold over the web, not in any stores that I am aware of — so if you are unhappy with the mattress and want to return it, there will be a hefty shipping charge to return. Besides having to purchase a mattress box (you cannot re-roll the mattress), you would need to ship this back by a freight company.
This mattress comes with a 15 pro-rated warranty. (But may still be costly to YOU as you have to ship the mattress back to the manufacturer in Dalton, Georgia.
